Now, I agree with them on an abstract basis, but this is really fucking annoying behavior, as well as being ultimately bad for business. It would be way better for them to give you the option to pay some small fee to earn the right to to this. The end result of the current system is that consumers hate it and refuse to buy another copy out of general principle, diminishing demand and discouraging brand loyalty. It would be better business to simply charge money for the option -- it's clearly something people want. They could just market it as 'insurance' and, if they did, i doubt the general public would even realize or care.
