game comes out friday.
gamer blows through an xbox 360 game in one sitting friday night, sells it saturday. gets money back for the game.
next gamer walks in on saturday, sees two copies available. one is used, one isn't. same disc, same content.
now we all know that developers are compartmentalizing games to monetize that last part... change the available content to recoup some money against that second sale of which they see zero revenue, and gamestop gets profit... twice.
piracy isn't even really on the radar yet for this discussion, just the basic framework of the used game market which has been around for a REALLY long time. piracy does suck and has an extreme effect on companies protecting their products like how a store would go crazy installing metal detectors and RFID detectors if they have a surge in shoplifting.
