Modica, have you ever read the rules for any of these games:
Spirit of the Century
Weapons of the Gods
Dogs in the Vineyard
Buring Wheel/Empires
Don't Rest Your Head
Primetime Adventures
Mortal Coil
All of them have superb physical AND social combat rules. Most of them use the same system for both (with the exception of Weapons of the Gods, which has this whole kung-fu thing going for it).
And D&D's already pretty damn abstract (hit points are *very* abstract), I really don't see why social combat wouldn't be doable in it as well. Do I know how to do it? No, but I wish they'd at least take a stab at it!
