I really think if you keep the plots of d&d based on what D&D does best you'll be fine, and with powers set up the way they are, their main focus is on combat. That's cool, cuz they do combat well, but lately i've been exposed to some new game mechanics from smaller, more obscure games and they're really opened my eyes to what a RPG rule's system can do for non-combat situations.
