TLDR: It's good, very gamist, but if that's what you're looking for you'll be pretty happy with it.

I guess what I'm saying is D&D is great for killing critters and taking their stuff, and when you try to tell people it's not so hot for things BESIDES that they get all huffy, yet there are so many wonderful examples out there of other games that handle the "non-killing-things-for-their-stuff" side of a game.
I mean, I've seen a huge, epic battle of wills that was full of crazy maneuvers and stuff to determine the fate of a small town, and it was all played out as a prayer before eating dinner Dogs in the Vineyard You just can't DO something like that in D&D. Some of my favorite systems are really very bare-bones as far as rules go, it's just a matter of what you do with those rolls that makes it so great.
It's because I like D&D so much that I'd like to see more from it. I was right in the boat with you guys until about 2 years ago when I played a game called Weapons of the Gods. It blew my goddamn mind. Since then i've been following the indie RPG scene, and there's so much great stuff there, the old guard ideas of the authoritative DM and players with no power over the setting quickly lost a lot of their appeal. I see now the GOOD of D&D, and the GOOD of the indie RPG world, and I'd like to see them come togeather.
I think what i'm looking for is Burning Wheel, but i've never played it, only Burning Empires.
