tl;dr:
A pretty good series of games gets shelved because of piracy. :[

Here is the truth about piracy and other crap in the games industry:
1. Piracy does not directly translate into lost sales.
2. It's close to impossible to protect any software from piracy (MMO/online type games may be an exception?)
3. Any company that blames piracy for a game losing money is just making excuses for their poor business model or craptacular game.
4. Cutting the price of your games DOES directly translate to more sales. A great example is NFL 2K5. Visual concepts sold the game for $19.99 that year and they stole a HUGE marketshare from EA (who was selling madden for $50 I think). Not only did they get a new audience that never would have given their game a chance, but they actually made more money than they would have selling the game for $40. It didn't matter that they ended up in the cheap bin, because people frequently buy games from that bin!
5. Many/most games are not profitable. Not because of piracy but because the game sucked or they had a poor business model.
6. The games industry is still coming of age. Right now it's not in the best shape but the industry is learning and has a very bright future. The games industry is pretty big right now but it's really nowhere close to it's potential.
7. Ad revenue will be HUGE for game companies in the future. I'm not sure why you laugh at it.
8. Did I forget anything?
