tl;dr:
A pretty good series of games gets shelved because of piracy. :[

Every game I play, I buy. I've bought multiple copies of good games and given them to friends because they were good and I wanted the company to do well and I wanted my friends to play with me, but I understand this isn't the typical case.
No one is ever going to completely stop pirating. I think all devs should do is put a copy protection that prevents casual pirating into place and quit worrying about hardcore pirates. If someone has to have decent tech knowledge and has to jump through several hoops to make the pirated version play (ie things like Alcohol or Daemon Tools ), most people would never do it.
I'm not a big fan of Steam but it works decently for keeping the average person from stealing a game (as far as I am aware, I don't keep up with the piracy methodology unless it makes the front page of webpages I read).
