tl;dr:
A pretty good series of games gets shelved because of piracy. :[

Whether or not you game costs 100,000 to make or 20 million to make has no bearing on the piracy potential of your game; all games get pirated period. You say that Galactic Civ is doing well because it cost little to make – and by assumption, you would lead us to believe that because of the low production cost, a high piracy rate on GC will not affect its ability to break even and even produce profit. Well, for one, I highly doubt it cost less than “East Side Hockey Manager†(which is what the original topic is about) – even with NHL licensing involved. And two, even taking the “price to produce†in consideration it doesn’t explain a multitude of other high budget titles still manage to sell well despite piracy; I mean if piracy is so rampant and damaging that it can kill a low budget game like “East Side Hockey Managerâ€Â, how does any PC game break even? Furthermore, the most popular and best selling game for the past (what 4 years?) has been the Sims; which is quite piratable and doesn’t need any continual “checking of legitimacy†(ie no online CD-key check or MMO type stuff).
I have an alternate theory on why “East Side Hockey Manager†failed to sell and it has nothing to do with piracy.
First of all, and you can ask NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on this, the only people that give a fuck about the NHL in mass is Canadians. Canada, which has a meagre population of ~32,844,800, mostly only gives a shit about Canadians actually PLAYING hockey; not watching some text based statistical simulation on how well their favourite team might possibly do in some fantasy world on their PC. Of the maybe 5% of Canadians not watching hockey on TV to give a shit about a stupid PC game, maybe 1% of those actually care about the ongoing statistics of all the players in the league. Of that 1% who might be interested in “East Side Hockey Managerâ€Â, only 10% of that 1% actually heard of the damn game, and only 1% of that 1% can actually BUY the game in their local store.
So that leaves about 20 Canadians.. and, oh hell, maybe 1 American, that is so concerned that their son is going to get drafted in the NHL that they actually buy “East Side Hockey Manager†just to see if it MIGHT happen ... and really they are only double checking what the gypsy (or I guess its “psychic†nowadays) told them anyway.
... and they wonder why they can break even?!!? MUST BE PIRACY!
