Original game didn't sell amazingly well, but sold enough to justify an expansion pack. Expansion pack was the first game to use SafeDisc. Expansion pack outsold the original game by 50%.
Lots of people who would pirate would actually buy the game if piracy wasn't an option. Given that an expansion pack on average sells 40% of the units the original game sold, you can guess how many people would have actually bought the original game had copy protection been effective.
Piracy can't be stopped, but the longer it is delayed, the more likely that the "pirates with ethics" will actually buy the game instead of warez it.
