Seriously, game funding is all about return on investment. Lower cost games don't need to sell as many copies. At the same time, only particular genres fit into that bucket.
For example, I don't know if RTS games are going to survive in their current incarnation. The costs to be competitive went way up while sales didn't. Either production quality on RTS games will go down over time or publishers will simply stop funding them.
