Fez 2 canceled

Fez 2 has been canceled.

109

Fez 2 has been canceled. The abrupt termination of the project is as sudden as its announcement, which involved a teaser trailer and little more. On the Polytron official website, game creator Phil Fish wrote "I am done. I take the money and I run. This is as much as I can stomach. This is isn't the result of any one thing, but the end of a long, bloody campaign."

"You win," he added.

Given Fez's penchant for out-of-the-box puzzles, some fans believe this is actually a hoax, or an elaborate ploy to raise awareness for his game. However, he told Joystiq that "it's true" the game has been canceled. According to Kotaku the sudden cancellation of the game was triggered by a dispute he had on Twitter.

"I f---ing hate this industry," Fish apparently responded. "It's just not worth it anymore," he told Kotaku in a statement.

Can't he just deactivate his twitter account and not attend any conferences? That seems like that would solve most problems he has.

That said, gamers are the worst. The Super Meat Boy people had to deal with so much shit too and they seem like pretty cool people.

      • reply
        July 27, 2013 3:18 PM

Is that really the problem though?

Jason DeGroot, Phil Fish's original partner on Fez, left on very bad terms for Toronto where he contributed to Capybara and Queasy. It was so bad that the Polytron funded Indie Game: The Movie lied about Degroot's lack of involvement in the film and later had to retract the statement that Degroot declined to be involved with the film when he threatened litigation.

Fish's last co-colaborator, Renaud Bedard, who was the sole programmer on Fez, also left Polytron for Capybara in Toronto after Fez shipped.

I have the impression that the problem is Phil Fish.

I'm sure he's horrible to work with but it seems like what's making him leave the industry is all of the confrontations he has with other people.

Becoming a hermit would probably fix that aside from the people he actually has to develop games with.

Fish claims it wasn't just this, but I really don't see how they would produce an E3 teaser trailer if they were so unsure of the project that its be cancelled in a month. But, I guess some have been cancelled with more.

Marcus's shtick has always been I hate this and if you don't too then you couldn't find a whore in a brothel or whatever stupid saying he has. He constantly attacks others when they don't agree with his opinion but when he gets called out on the same thing he cries about how he's, and other, are entitled to think differently.

I sometimes find him interesting but usually he just spouts off without all the facts in much the same way Xav was doing to FF14 before Andrew had to set him straight.

That said if Fish ended up quitting because of twitter... I can understand if it probably got to a point where the asshats outnumbered the genuine so blocking would become all consuming. At that point you do have to think if the value add is worth the grief. About your only choice by that point is to go private. But then if you do want to communicate with your fans or constructive criticism that's a no go as well. Do you stay and continue dealing or leave and loose the good. He may be an ass but I don't envy him, or anyone else that is in the limelight, that has to give up something they enjoy just because of the masses.

Sometimes you can't. Sometimes those kinds of people are so loud and pervasive that you just have to leave the room, or else something like what Phil Fish just did ends up happening. I should know, because I seem to have a temperament similar to Fish (which is why I'm not on Twitter).

He needs some positive reinforcement right now, someone to remind him of how insignificant and prickish people like Beer are. I don't want to see him burn down Polytron just over one asshole's rant.

A weak and fast to anger temper should not be coddled or reinforced, especially in a business setting. Yeah, it's his company and his game, but if you just say "fuck it" and pack up when someone trolls you, you probably shouldn't deal with anything public. At the very least, throw your tantrums in private and away from your work.

Also the Internet as a whole is a hypersensitive baby that gets real mad when other hypersensiive babies get attention for any reason, so a good portion of the Internet is mad at Phil Fish for dumb reasons going back like 4 years, and while acknowledging that Phil Fish is a hypersensitive baby, he has some decent reasons for wanting to take his ball and go home.

He doesn't owe the press quotes, but he also doesn't have to be a child about being asked a question. I don't know his direct reaction, but judging by Jonathan Blow's twitter and Annoyed Gamer's rant, they both got an attitude because they were asked a question based on a rumor. Instead of just stating, "I don't comment on rumors" and that being the end of it, it looks like they went on some crusade against the state of games journalism. When, shockingly, they got some negative feedback on twitter, they both bitch and moan.

Indie Game: The Movie is biased. Polytron's funding came from Trapdoor which was cofounded by Ken Schachter. Ken Schachter was the executive producer of Indie Game: The Movie and executive producer means that he gave them a lot of money. That's a very direct conflict of interest.

It manifested in a one sided portrayal of Phil Fish's dispute with his former partner Jason Degroot making out Degroot to be the unreasonable antagonist to Fish's suffering. Worse still, the movie originally started that the unnamed Degroot declined to participate in the film, when in fact Degroot had explicitly been told he would not be participating. After purported threats of litigation, Indie Game: The Movie changed the closing remark to state that Degroot was not asked to participate, but fails to disclose that they were getting money directly from Phil Fish's employer to make the film.

            Really?

Then what happened with Jason DeGroot exactly? He's purportedly an outstanding guy as well, and with first hand accounts from people here. DeGroot left on very bad terms with Phil Fish and didn't really say much about Fish other than defending his standpoint. No grand standing or no bashing, he just moved on with his life except with Fish and co decided to go after him in Indie Game: The Movie, which flat out lied about DeGroot after painting him as a badguy. DeGroot moved to Toronto and contributed to games by Capybara and Queasy.

What happened with Phil Fish's next cohort? Renaud Bedard never really took much credit for Fez even though he single handedly did all the programming and probably more. Bedard worked with Fish for around 5 years and once Fez shipped he ditched Polytron to go work at Capybara -- yeah, the same Capybara that Phil Fish's hated co-creator of Fez works with. When asked about Phil Fish and Polytron Bedard just says no comment.

Does that sound like a honest great guy to you?

Fish isn't all innocent at stirring up internet drama either.

He told people to suck his dick when he won IGF for the forth year in a row because his game was still in development.

He trolled people on Steam for making Fez #1 before it was out, after he'd told PC gamers to fuck off that PCs were for spreadsheets.

He's not some misunderstood saint, he's just someone who can talk a big game, but can't take it when someone does the same to him.

Doesn't "tired of that shit" just mean stop reading the internet? Stop telling people to suck on/choke on your dick? Stop having a public presence? Couldn't any of these things happen before you dramabomb all over the internet and cancel your game in a ridiculous huff?

We're all sitting here talking about this, Phil Fish is probably cursing at the monitor in a patois of english and french in his downtown studio apartment, in a week and a half he will uncancel the game and swear off social networks, and then two weeks after that he will be back, business as usual.

So many people live their entire lives in obscurity. To be loved and even despised on that scale is a blessing that the vast majority of humanity has and never will know.

I do love hating on Fish, because he's just ridiculous. He tells people to choke on his dick and then acts put upon when they "bite back". He wears stupid facial hair. He has absolutely no filter on social networks and in public forums. He's a clownman and acts like he doesn't understand why people gawk at him.

Now me, let's say I created a wildly successful video game, and wanted to run off at the mouth and tell people to choke on my dick and that Japanese people couldn't game design their way out of a wet paper bag and PCs are for spreadsheet and all that shit? If that's what I wanted to do, I would not cancel the ridiculously anticipated followup to that game because some other douchebag ran off at the mouth.

Additionally, I would much prefer it if more developers spoke their minds like Fish does. As much as people hate to admit it, a lot of gamers are self-entitled asshats that bitch and moan more than Fish ever did, especially when things don't go their way. Many journalists are the same way. They feel like they're owed something from developers or publishers for some unknown reason.

I dont know any of the back story, nor have i played Fez, however it is super unreasonable for someone with a media spotlight to be so pointed towards such a small game developer (indie dev). Yes, people who are already in the media spotlight should be aware that they are going to cop shit from all directions but that does not make it fair for someone to attack an individual with such gumption.

Is Fish's response appropriate? No, however i do not think it is unreasonable for an individual to flip their shit if all they are exposed to is a constant barrage of negativity.

I could maybe understand if this was a one-off, but Phish basically says incredibly stupid things almost on a weekly basis - which is fine, whatever, Fez was a good game, but he has no ground to stand on when he gets all indignant about someone calling him on his bullshit. He has always been a little baby about a lot of things, and his head is so very firmly planted up his own ass that all he hears is his own echo.

That said, annoyed gamer (Marcus beer) is a self-important blowhard who thinks he has his hand "on the pulse" of gaming because it he actually used to work in PR - which is kind of hilarious in this situation. His sthick is just to be loud and obnoxous though, so he's basically just doing his normal routine here. Not that it has any value, because it does not.

The situation is hilarious to everyone watching because it was two of the most loose-lipped immature baby-men in gaming throwing poop at each other until one of them just packed up their toys and left. I'm excited to see how this sordid tale ends. My guess is with Phish start work back up on Fez 2 and Marcus doubling down as an asshole under the cover of "this is what I do, i'm playing a character" or the like. Should be fun.

If for nothing else, let's give Phil Fish credit for his creative way of throwing a 21st century tantrum. It seems like Australia is lucky to have Hugh Jackman, or all your celebrities would be known for losing their shit. (I know how stupid this statement is, so don't bother.)

Maybe he doesn't deserve this kind of vitriol from some random person (i.e. me).

It's been a long weekend, and everytime I jump on the net, I come across this site. His tweets make me mad every time I see them, so perhaps my response to them has grown out of proportion to what he said. I don't think I was wrong in any given instance, but maybe the passion with which I said them deserves an apology on my part.

Sorry Fish. You're still a self righteous ponce, but I apologize for telling you as much. Again.

So good on him for overreacting in the most hilarious way possible? I get that people have tempers...I understand that but why should we celebrate it. Someone was an asshole and Fish's response was to go all "You are tearing me apart, Lisa".

While I agree about Beer, I dissagree about Fish.

Anyone who's business plan has a line that says :
"- Cancel everything if an internet twit says mean things to me"
        then he is a twat.

This is a case of twit vs twat.

The journalist is absolutely wrong, without a doubt. But so is Fish. How he reacted was completely out of line.

Sad truth though, Fish has been bullied so much over the years he ultimately became a bully himself as a defense mechanism. Sad, but his bed now.

to further elaborate, he's such a drama queen. Many people have made games, indie games, non indie games, for 30-40 years now. He invites needless drama and gets pissy when things don't go his way. It's video games for goodness sake, just chill the hell out and make something.

Sort of. Telefilm Canada gave him around $75,000 as a repayable advance a few years back, but Trapdoor stepped in when he ran out of money and I'm sure they didn't do that just out of the kindness of their hearts. Compound that with an order of magnitude less units sold than games like Super Meat Boy and it becomes pretty likely that Phil Fish isn't rich by any means.

Yeah this sounds about right, FEZ took quite a while to get out of the red. I remember hearing about how it sold all these units and yet still owed MS a bunch of cash.

This smells to me like development was going poorly and Fish was looking for any reason to ditch the project. When Beer came along he thought he could kill two birds with one stone; cancel the project and sway opinion against Beer (which is obviously a poorly devised plan).

I think he didn't want to do a sequel at all. He wanted to be done with it, because he was so burned out, but the success made him think otheriwse apparently and who can blame him?

That's my thought as well. I don't think he had much if anything at all with Fez 2, especially considering he lost his only programmer. You can't make a game with no development capacity.

I watched Indie Game the Movie last night and was struck by how sensitive and harsh Phil Fish was. He basically threatened to kill someone and was complaining that what everyone says really gets to him.

He would probably be better off working at a game studio were he doesn't need to be the front man.

It's mostly his loss. Fez was a great game though.

This guy really gets way to hurt over people's thoughts. People will insult you, your project, and your ideas. Even more so if you are of any popularity. Part of growing up is dealing with situations that aren't favorable to you. It's where you build/show your character the most.

If you enjoy what you do, ef the haters.

Phil Fish owes nothing to anyone.

Watch Indie Game the movie then you can see making Indie games isn't all shitting rainbows and sunshine, it's stressful as hell from the looks of it.

Game consumers are a bunch of assholes anyways, all the power to him if he wants to abort it.
