I launched a new iOS app this month (https://RainTally.com) for tracking much rainfall you've had and comparing across years. It's available globally in Yankee English, but I want to localize it in other languages. I've been experimenting with using ChatGPT to translate and I guess it's working? If anybody is fluent in Spanish or Japanese, SM me and I'll let you beta test it and you can tell me if it says "Your precipitation amount violates OpenAI's policies" all over the place. My plan is to pay for an actual translation service if I find out there is demand for it in other languages, but I don't see how to find that out without an app available in that language. So my LLM-translation is my "good enough to get demand data" approach.

I’ve seen two movies that I’d previously never seen since we last convened for MOVIE MONDAY.
You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah - The wife and I were in the mood for something kinda lightweight over the weekend so this fit the bill. Not a ton to say about this one. There’s some decent comedy here (one particular line about a girl’s period had me guffawing) and a heartwarming story about a teenager learning to not be selfish. It looks like Sandler made this movie with his family, which is cool, but his daughter who plays the protagonist is unfortunately probably the weakest link in the movie, but Sandler himself has some good dad energy. Nothing to write home about, but it’s good.
Columbus - This is a little indie from 2017 that I’ve been curious about for a while. It’s a beautifully subtle film about a couple of semi-lost souls who connect over the course of a few days in Columbus, Indiana. They discuss their lives while musing over the modernist architecture the city is known for. The lead characters are wonderfully performed by John Cho and Haley Lu Richardson, and use of the camera & framing to peer into moments of their lives reminded me a bit of In The Mood For Love. If you like patient, understated dramas, then check this one out.

If anyone else has been finding themselves increasingly surrounded by clutter lately (and you have access to a 3D printer), I’ve been trying out a project called “Gridfinity” over the last month and I absolutely love it.
It’s basically a “design standard” and you work within the boundaries of it to create modular organization systems. The details are here:

I managed to collapse nearly a full workbench scattered with piles of parts into a very neat corner with everything visible and easily accessible.

It’s geared at workbenches, but a lot of people are using it at their desk, kitchens and bedside tables.

Fincher acknowledged the series' high production costs, which ultimately became a point of contention with Netflix executives. When presented with the options of either cutting costs, broadening the show’s appeal, or ending it, Fincher and his team remained committed to their original vision. This unwavering stance, while admirable, meant that Mindhunter could not continue under its existing framework.
“We went as far as we could until someone finally said to us: it makes no sense to produce this series like this, unless you can reduce the budget, or make it pop, so that more people will watch it. We did not want to change our approach so, respectfully, they told us that they were drawing a line under it.”
Props to Fincher for not compromising his vision. Plenty of other directors would change the tone to try to appeal to a wider audience, at the expense of quality. That could buy them another season or 2 but at least this way Mindhunter retains its legendary status.

One of the nice benefits of MAX is all the classic WB cartoons on there. There is an awful lot of Scooby Doo material but I don't know if any of it holds up as well as these classic episodes. Five seasons of Scrappy Doo? I think I'll probably skip those.

I'm thinking of getting Stardew Valley, I've seen that's it's awesome, and one of the top played games on the Deck, my only concern is do you need to use the track pads on the Deck, or can you control it solely via the directional pad and joysticks? I absolutely hate the track pads on the Deck because of my weirdly jointed thumbs. I just can't use them, so I stick top games that don't use them on the Deck.
