The fact of the matter is that to most people, there are more important things to spend their money on than games, and they wont spend every £/$/€ on their collection, thus they buy a few games and trade them with their friends, especially true of kids. This happens with pretty much every single non-perishable good out there.
If anything game sales would go down if this aspect was removed, most kids would just buy the exact same AAA titles, I remember half my PSX games were second hand from a shop, there was no way I was shelling out full price every time, or no way my parents would give me that kind of money.
