Anthem game director: "A world that has been abandoned by its gods"

The 'shared-world social RPG' has plenty to offer players.

BioWare's upcoming new IP Anthem is going to be quite the phenomenon when it finally releases next year, and fans can't wait to get their hands on it. Shacknews caught up with game director Jon Warner for a conversation on all things Anthem and what kind of science fiction world-building we can expect from the game - including the final say on what kind of game it actually is.

Anthem is a "shared-world social RPG, sometimes known as the 'shooter looter.' From the genre's perspective, it is a science fantasy adventure," said Warner.

But much more interesting than the game's genre is certainly what went into putting the storyline together. "We decided that we would make this a world that has been abandoned by its gods," said Warner. "It is super dangerous as a result of that, so it requires heroes who are able to use these Javelin exo-suits because it gives them these super-heroic powers to go out and deal with the world."

Currently, Anthem is scheduled to release on February 22, 2019. Make sure you take some time off for the game accordingly!

Is he talking about the good doctors of Bioware? He may be right!

I hope this game isn’t just a literal Destiny clone.

This game doesn't even register for me. Between that and BF V, it's like EA doesn't even exist for another year.

I have friends at Bioware who equate working on this game to just cashing paychecks and getting to stay in the industry. They are excited for projects after Anthem that aren't Anthem 2

Not everyone feels that way at Bioware. No company is a monolith.

Is there even a Bioware if this doesn’t make bank?

Probably. Even if its a hit most people are expecting massive layoffs as Anthem development winds down and Star Wars The Old Republic is closed.

I wish they had gone with a better free to play model with that game.

I wish they could port that to consoles or strip out the MMO stuff for just the single player content. I always wanted to try it and never got to it yet beyond the beta way back.

I definitely enjoyed the content it was a good concept. I would have been more interested had they followed a better path with the free to play content.

Word is getting around. They are finishing up 6.0 and that's the last of any content in the pipeline. The game probably will be up till the end of 2019 but it will only need a skeleton crew to keep it going.

It definitely seems like an uninspired game. It's a shame EA fucked that studio up.

Before it even launches too. That's actually pretty rare these days.

Anthem does not look great to me.

Great graphics, wonderful polish. But the gameplay looks kinda stale.

The story seemed really wierd to me too... like... you are some kind of mercenary? But there is no explanation as to how you got some crazy high tech shit that nobody else has...?

I dunno. It's a "wait and see" title, for me. It hasn't wow'd me so far.

I've already written this game off. Not interested in a Destiny style microtransaction-based multiplayer game. I understand that Bioware/EA is chasing the money but I wish they would go back to polished single player games.
