Think of how the PS2 enabled GTA 3, 360 enabled Oblivion, 486 enabled Quake... I'm still thinking of my answer :(

Think about games like Dragon Age for a minute. All these different ways to respond when interactiing with the various characters. And each choice leads you down a tree of possible, PRE DEFINED outcomes. This is now.
Future:
The AI rules and personalities for each character in the game all start at their pre-defined points. But each AI on the fly grows and adapts it's rules, based on the interactions you choose, which then reflects the available interactions as you progress thru the story. You could play it 100 times and have a different experience and outcome each time. But the golden part is that all the dialog doesn't have to be written up or recorded ahead of time like it is now. The AI's responses will grow and change, fitting within the personality of the character. Speech synthesis technology will allow the characters to talk to you in the on the fly generated story, with on the fly generated speech in the voice of the chosen actor to play the role. From some baseline recordings of the actors voice, saying various words in various moods and inflections, the computer will be able to completely synthesize that voice in all manner of responses.
Did I blow your mind or what. This shit is coming.
