Think of how the PS2 enabled GTA 3, 360 enabled Oblivion, 486 enabled Quake... I'm still thinking of my answer :(

Many times developers talk about one scripted sequence they spent time on a game that a lot of players didn't notice. It bums them out. The level of detail you describe would be a similar scenario X100. If players aren't going to see it, don't spend tons of time on it. If it can be done easier the conventional way, do it. It's just common sense to them. Push the boundaries where it will be evident to a majority of players.
