Think of how the PS2 enabled GTA 3, 360 enabled Oblivion, 486 enabled Quake... I'm still thinking of my answer :(

Speaking mainly for FPS games, I would like to get away from the graphics one-upping over a predecessor. I wish there were a greater emphasis on creating great, fun, replayable games with current tech. There are games that don't really have cutting-edge graphics but more than make up for it with style and direction (World of Warcraft, e.g.).
Big studios seem to currently have a problem taking a risk on something that isn't a sequel or a virtual carbon-copy of someone else's game. Given that, it's hard to find a revolutionary game that also had the resources invested in it to really flesh it out. What I hope to see are toolsets and communication innovations that allow individuals or independent developers to pool their resources from various locations and collaborate on a project. Virtually every mod community shows us that there are amateurs just as talented as professionals in many aspects of game design and creation. Tapping into those resources during development or enabling those skilled amateurs would, I think, create some truly great games.
I'm not saying there aren't currently awesome or imaginative games: there are. Thinking of Quake, though, imagine if all of the amateur talent that contributed to the game (e.g. Frogbots, ZTN maps and Aerowalk, which are still played today in Quake Live in their new incarnations, etc.) had been incorporated from the start in the official release. Technological advancements are sound and somewhat predictable. Certainly all of the things you listed in your post will be improved over time. However, it's the human achievement that pushes the limits of current tech ("I had no idea that could be done with engine x!") that really makes the difference.
Unfortunately, the real answer to your question is probably 3D.
