Think of how the PS2 enabled GTA 3, 360 enabled Oblivion, 486 enabled Quake... I'm still thinking of my answer :(

The lack of radiosity is much harder to notice when you decrease the visual pallet. I know I've seen articles about this but can't seem to find them at the moment.
To note, Mirror's Edge faked it pretty well.
