Think of how the PS2 enabled GTA 3, 360 enabled Oblivion, 486 enabled Quake... I'm still thinking of my answer :(

Could we have had Deus Ex on the Mega Drive? Very roughly speaking, probably, but it'd be ugly, require the largest cart capacity they did, and be a totally different game with a fraction of the emergent gameplay and puzzle solutions. Like when I stacked a pile of sofas as a shortcut.
Now yes, that's the jump from 2D to 3D I'm referring to which was always going to be fundamentally game-changing, but even so, point stands.
