DualShock 3 designed for Gran Turismo, DualShock 4 designed for shooters

For many shooter fans, the Xbox 360 controller represents the gold standard. And, Sony concedes that DualShock 3 for PS3 wasn't designed with shooters in mind. The stick stiffness was loosened due to feedback from Polyphony Digital, developer of the Gran Turismo series.

"DualShock 3 became really light because of the feedback from the Gran Turismo team," Sony's Toshimasa Aoki said. "Since they use it for steering, if it's too stiff, when you're going back and forth a lot, you get tired, so they wanted to make it lighter."

Sony tested Xbox stick layout for DualShock 4

Before settling on the largely-familiar design of the DualShock 4, Sony had experimented with a number of new controller ideas for PS4. One facet the company was mindful of was the placement of the analog sticks. Many shooter players have grown accustomed to the asymmetrical placement of both left and right sticks on Xbox 360's gamepad. Sony had to mull over whether or not they should follow.

"For the analog sticks, we did test having the analog sticks on top, since the Xbox has the left side on top [above the D-pad]," Sony's Toshimasa Aoki said. "Especially from the shooter teams--we got feedback that that's what they wanted. They knew that consumers liked the 360 for shooters."

PlayStation 4 controller 'basic functions' to work in Windows

Getting a PlayStation 3 controller working in Windows requires downloading third-party drivers and tools, but thankfully it'll be far easier with the PS4's DualShock 4. The new controller's "basic functions" should be just peachy on PC, though don't get your hopes up about fancy things like its touchpad or light bar.

Diablo 3 for PS4 uses touchpad for inventory management

Diablo 3 for PS4 uses touchpad for inventory management

Perhaps the most mysterious addition to the PlayStation 4 controller is its touchpad. Not quite a touchscreen, we're wondering how developers will utilize such a unique (and odd) addition to the DualShock.

The upcoming PS4 version of Diablo 3 will use the touchpad in some way, although Blizzard is being a bit coy about how it all actually works. "Diablo 3 has a lot of cool inventory things," lead console designer Josh Mosqueira said in a new video. "Just the possibility of the trackpad is really exciting and we can't wait to dive in and make it as awesome as we can."

How DualShock 4's light bar works in Killzone: Shadow Fall

How DualShock 4's light bar works in Killzone: Shadow Fall

One of the interesting new additions to the DualShock controller for PS4 is the light bar. Coupled with a new PlayStation Eye camera, the light bar will enable some PlayStation Move-esque functionality. (It will make co-op games smarter, as well.) However, there are other applications for the light bar, as evidenced by Killzone: Shadow Fall.

DualShock 4 is 'near final' design

The PlayStation 4 announcement didn't show any of the console itself, but did show the redesigned controller. The DualShock 4 bears a lot in common with its predecessors, with a few tweaks like the touch pad and dedicated Share button. And while Sony isn't quite ready to call it the final design, it's close.
