Nice list. Can't spend a minute on each game tho? Little more detail might be nice.

Seemed like he spent the right amount for a top 10 list. Would have got pretty lengthy otherwise.

Oh can I list some others I think might be contenders because why not, you might do a part two someday.

Ikari Warriors, Alien Syndrome, Gauntlet, Rolling Thunder (more side scroller but close..), Berzerk and Forgotten Worlds

Ikari Warriors was one that made me want to fire Greg, but then I saw Sunset Riders and I was happy again.

Yup, Ikari Warrior really shoulda been on the list. It did several things first.

"Even in 2016, the game [Metal Slug] has aged extremely well ... for a game released in 1996."
I don't guess you're going to rerecord the audio to fix that though.

So relieved that #1 is Metal Slug, the best!

it's basically the only correct answer

For reals. Contra is a solid #2 or #3 but Metal Slug is so much better than everything else in the genre.

I'm surprised we all forgot Rolling Thunder.

A couple of my favorites, perhaps a bit too side-scroller like for this top 10 but anyway:

Does anyone remember a run 'n' gun arcade game that was fantasy/sci-fi themed and you could pick from a large pool of characters? It was top down (maybe isometric?) and was dated some time around late 80s to mid 90s guessing)? Might have been on the Neo Geo.

I was getting myself all worked up thinking it was going to be overlooked and then it was #2. Good stuff. Lots of fond memories of a lot of those games.

Two that come to mind that shoulda been on the list

      Ikari Warriors for sure

      and maybe Front Line

Front Line had two things that I hadn't seen other places.
      1) The dial control for aiming
      2) Getting into a tank for armor and extra fire power
Plus I think it was the first game that let you throw a grenade

I'm not sure if my memories are reliable about the actual gameplay, but the visuals of The Chaos Engine plus the voicework blew me away. Think I played it on the Genesis.

Very cool video and I really dig the line up its really solid. So many good times playing all those epic games in the 90s.

Metal Slug will always be KING.
