Report: StarCraft 1 HD releasing in September 2016

According to a new report, we could be seeing an HD version of the original StarCraft.

26

Blizzard Entertainment’s StarCraft series is one among many of its iconic franchises, and next month, the company appears to be announcing an HD version of its original StarCraft and releasing it the same day.

The report comes from iNews24, who says they’ve confirmed this information with multiple sources with knowledge of Blizzard’s internal plans.

StarCraft HD is expected to feature the same gameplay of the original game, but will offer improved visuals and user interface.

As for the timing of the announcement, the StarCraft II World Championship series will end next month in Mexico, so a reveal during its big event is certainly possible.

We’ve reached out to Blizzard for comment and will update our story accordingly.

I hope they do this for their other old titles. I'd totally buy a Warcraft 2 HD and a Diablo 1 HD.

They've already mentioned something about diablo.

Would totally be into a remaster of War2, as long as the gameplay is identical. Bonus if it can suck in old maps too.

Oh, fuck yeah. I wouldn't want anything changed but maybe some kind of modern Battle.net connection and the map editor, too.

Would be crucial to keep bloodlust the exact same.

Yup, loved War2, never could get into Starcraft (no idea why) but I'll give the HD release a chance.

As far as mechanics, they aren't drastically different - if I remember war2 right -- been a long while. Although I guess the tech tree may have felt a bit more scattered since there were multiple buildings to manage upgrades vs how war2 did it. again, if I'm remembering right. been a long time since I've played war2 or sc1.

I felt the same way as MBD. I mean, I played Starcraft a bunch because it was the 90s and it was a Blizzard RTS, but the setting, characters, story, and music just paled in comparison to Warcraft 2 for me.

The gameplay of Starcraft is arguably better though.

I can see that. It wasn't until SC2 that the world/ lore was on par to what War2 had.

They hired some people about a year ago to work on some of their older games, I'm guessing this is the result. They also mentioned Warcraft 3, and Diablo 2 so I'm thinking we'll see some kind of HD versions of those too.

This game is so much harder than you remember. You can't queue shit. You can select 8? Units?

I agree that there are some limitations that come along with it just being an older game. I'd love to see a remaster of War2 where they fixed a few of those basic UI things, like queuing and unit selection, multiple orders, etc.

I still haven't decided how I feel about this trend of just HDifying older games and rereleasing them. On one hand it's pretty cool because you can relive some of your favorite gaming experiences and newer generations can maybe enjoy them too, but on the other hand I think I'd rather studios devote time to new games rather than revamping ones I've already played a ton.

Entirely different teams are doing the remasters, its no drain on resources at all

I mean, sure, but there's always the opportunity cost that whoever is doing remasters could be doing a new game instead.

These additional people specifically working on remasters would likely not be working on a newer game if they weren't doing this. Different skillset, not to mention hires made relatively recently based on Blizzard's job listings from two years ago.

In a way, it's quite good. Gaming has a problem with keeping it's history available. The vast majority of films and songs have no chance of disappearing, but due to tech changes we quite frequently see old games stop working with nobody around to fix them.

These HD remake things come with compatability for modern operating systems etc. which will make it easier for the game to be preserved into the future.

I kind of hope it's just a port to the StarCraft II engine and that I can launch a Brood War game from the StarCraft II client.

Bullshit. Why would they do this? StarCraft 1 is vastly inferior to StarCraft 2, and the RTS genre isn't very popular anymore. Sure, lots of older gamers have fond memories of the StarCraft 1 campaign. It rocked back then, no question about it. But it would feel really dated if it were simply re-mastered technologically.

0.5m sales in Korea and 0.5 sales worldwide, maybe more if they sell it for really cheap. I'd be surprised if this rumor is real. Blizzard isn't known for making products just to make a few quick bucks.

I'm hoping it will be in the SC2 engine. The story is rumor so it could really be anything from a tiny patch like the Diablo 2 widescreen fix to SC1-in-SC2-engine.

Hmm. I guess Blizzard is already producing episodic SC2 content with that Nova campaign. I guess if they keep the scope similarly small constrained to single-player, a SC2 remaster of the old SC1 campaigns isn't too far fetched.

There's a fan campaign of SC1 for SC2. I think I got the link from the Shack way back when Wings of Liberty was a big deal. Probably worth a google if you want that. It seemed very faithful and I think it even included the cutscenes and between mission briefings with the talking heads and stuff.

Yes, I've played through that 2-3 times! It's called SCMR (Starcraft Mass Recall) and it's quite good as a fan creation but I bet Blizzard would do it quite a bit better.

Hellllllll yes!! I wonder if it's going to be the same game that you can now run at 1080p, or if it's going to be something along the lines of Starcraft 1 in the Starcraft 2 engine. I hope it's the latter, but even the former would be nice.

SC's single-player campaign (including Brood War) is probably the one I completed the most out of any game I've ever played.

Although Deus-Ex: Human Revolution is fast approaching that.
