The Human Torch blazing onto Marvel Heroes

Flame on! Saturday's Marvel Video Games Comic-Con panel revealed that The Human Torch would soon be coming to Marvel Heroes, with new heroes and costumes not far behind.

It's been two months since Marvel Heroes launched. So of course, it's time for some new content. The first new hero joining the roster is the Fantastic Four's Human Torch.

A new trailer from Comic-Con showed off some of his fire-based powers, his trademark banter, and three costumes. The Human Torch is currently undergoing the testing phase and will be available soon. He can be purchased using real money or with Eternity Splinters, which are rare drops that can be obtained through gameplay.

Additional characters coming down the pipeline include Emma Frost, Luke Cage, and Squirrel Girl, along with a notable re-skinning for Spider-Man. Spidey will receive the "Superior Spider-Man" costume, which switches him to the Doctor Octopus-possessed character currently running in the comics. In addition to receiving revamped animations, the Superior Spider-Man will also be alternately voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes, who voiced the webslinger in the 90's Spider-Man animated series.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I just checked Steam and I have 51 hours in this thing so far. They've made some good updates lately, and Wolverine is finally playing like Wolverine. Just mass carnage and a bullet sponge. I've got about 6 or 7 characters, and I've barely gotten into them yet.

There were hints dropped in that panel that Storm's getting buffed at some point, so she might be worth playing pretty soon, too.

She's already pretty powerful in the end game. Just massive AoE attacks. I don't think any of the characters "suck" anymore.

In solo play you are correct.

Group play changes things significantly. Both Ms. Marvel and Wolverine are pretty much trash in group play due to the way game mechanics work. There are some others in this same category, but the rest have a way to get around the damage scaling in at least a reasonable fashion. But they become utterly dependent on those one or two skills at that point.

people spec into DoTs, they aren't affected by the group damage scaling. they don't crit either, which is another bug.

they said they're going to release a fix for it soon. they'll review the damage scaling and mob hp after the DoT fix, which means group play is going to suck, especially limbo.

Informal question for Marvel Heroes folks: Have Eternity Splinters dropped for you? How frequent are these drops?

Haven't seen them yet. I've got some from when the old drop thing converted into them I think though. I still have my egg thing from playing through the story too, which hasnt converted into anything yet.

you should take a look at their dev blog. major changes coming over all.

      -buffing all heroes, especially melee.
-new limbo "mid-town", where upto 10 players will kill waves and face 3 villain teams at the end.
-2 new item types and slots. they released a new item quality level (cosmic, that comes with +1 to all skills and a unique ability).
      -removal of useless costume affixes.
-additional artifacts and artifacts will be unique equipped (can't use 2 of the same artifacts).
      and other stuff.
