Battlefield 3 is getting a large patch on the PlayStation 3 today, adding a number of tweaks and fixes. One of the biggest updates comes in the form of server rentals on the console, for customized configurations and smoother play. Today, DICE has outlined the pricing plans and how it will move forward with the servers.

The Battlefield Blog prices the plans at $1.49, $6.99, $24.99, and $64.99 for the periods of 1, 7, 30, and 90 days, respectively. The blog also mentions that it is limiting server availability today, but will be ramping up progressively. Within a week DICE expects to have maximum capability available, so if you have trouble getting in you can try in a few days.

The PS3 patch also brings the option to turn off anti-aliasing for better input performance. The patch will come to PC and Xbox 360 sometime soon, with the more general fixes and balance tweaks.

I don't know if anyone else will encounter this issue, but following the patch on PS3, I had to re-download the back to karkand pack (free of course.)

      Just a heads up.

The PS3 update also includes some paid kits to unlock content...

Today, we are also offering 10 different shortcut items for sale for Battlefield 3 on PS3. If you’re new to the game, this is the perfect way to gain some ground on the veterans online. Or if you’d love to get some more air time in the jets but want to equip those AA missiles straight away, this is for you.

The 10 shortcut items are available now from the PlayStation Store and the in-game store and include these:
Kit Shortcut Bundle: Immediately unlocks all items unique to the four playable classes
Vehicle Shortcut Bundle: Immediately unlocks all items for all vehicles
The Ultimate Bundle: Immediately unlocks all items from all other available shortcut packs.

It's not pay 2 win because you earn all of those unlocks by playing anyway. This is great for people like me who only play like once a week and get constantly annoyed that everyone seems to have all of the best unlocks now. I would buy the Vehicle Shortcut.

the whole concept of unlocks for this already unbalanced and volatile gameplay experience is a fucking joke and the handling of ea and dice is even worse. having this mmo style treadwheel to unlock items is already highly annoying and practically leads to people playing on meatgrind servers to pad their stats enough to unlock items. (which in turn was interpreted by dice in "its evident that people want maps like metro because its played!")
its even worse when you want to unlock items for the vehicles.
now they offer you to buy the items instead monetizing on a already broken concept after they have already gotten money for the game. at least other developers monetize this way only by making the fucking game free to play.

they already pulled this borderline dubious shit with the preorder when they wanted to make some items preorder exclusive until fans went batshit insane over it and they decided to make it a time limited exclusive.

having stuff like the overpowered famas for example being introduced in the karkand dlc but allowing it on regular servers is another questionable decision continuing the bullshit they pulled with the booster packs in bf2.

in the meanwhile you still can not make working custom squads, the game crashes randomly and many folks still need the game crash on the first map load so that they can play the map on the second load.

I think it's totally valid. How many people post here about online games where they don't want to start playing after launch because "so many other people are ahead"? Tons. This addresses that.

I prefer having the ability to pay a (fair) price for unlocks than having to waste my time farming or exploiting the game with boring mechanics (the BF3 co-op level comes to mind).

This is why I'd prefer that multiplayer games just get rid of unlocks entirely. That said, I do acknowledge that there's a feeling of satisfaction in earning unlocks, especially in Mass Effect 3 where you're essentially buying booster packs. It's the closest thing I can think of to the elation/disappointment of opening a fresh booster pack of Magic cards and seeing what rares you got.

Yeah I'm really torn about the unlocks. I genuinely find them fun to unlock, but at the same time I recognize the complaints that you are underpowered if you haven't played as much as other people.

Overall I think the fun of unlocking them wins though. I really, really like unlocking new stuff.

That's true; it all comes down to balancing it properly. I don't like that in BF you need some of the unlocks to even play at all. Like the IR Flares in the jet; before you get those you are completely fucking useless

call of duty 4 was pretty fair with the unlocks. I mean right off the bat you got the m16, and in like 2 levels you got the RPD (aka win mode)

same with black ops. I had no problem running around raping in blops w/ just the mp5 until i unlocked the MPL.

The weapon unlocks in bf3 aint bad since a lot of the lower level guns you got are pretty good. Where the unlocks fail in bf3, are the launchers and extra shit for vehicles.

I think they managed to improve it too as the series went on. One thing that bothered me about CoD 4 was the + 1 grenade was an unlock you got at a really high level

yea that was insane with the extra grenade. The grenade spam on maps like downpour was legendary.

Most people use to spam them for shits and giggles. I used them as a true assault "fuck you" style. As in dumping 2 of those bitches into an area where i already know a fight is happening, and then mop up.

Even more 1337, was throwing them OUTSIDE of the level, like a little shortcut, to have them land back in the level at a different area and still getting kills. Crossfire was f'n great for this.

although in call of duty 3. The rifle grenades can eat a dick. COD3 was vastly different from the other COD games. You leveled up during the game. Once you hit a certain amount of kills, you would get +1 grenade, to a max of 3. So if you had 30 kills, you had 3 rifle grenades. Problem was EVERYONE would just point them at the ground and run 10' close to you and shoot them into the ground. Enemy would die, you would get minimal damage and live.

Wash, rinse, repeat. It was literally 3 free kills per life. Was stupidly annoying.

They should tie those unlocks to the rank as well as use. Because if you suck set flying but can level up other ways you're better at then it would reward playing the game in general versus narrowly focusing rewards. That way everyone can get all the unlocks at some point without grinding one role.

So, like, you can unlock IR flares when you get your flying rank to 10, but if you get any other skill to rank 20, then it unlocks everything that was rank 10 in any other skills? I think that would work.

how abot a simple "unlock all weapons" option for unranked servers?
the unlock system is a huge part of whats wrong with games and lack of balance in them.

what they are doing is taking a problem they introduced fully knowing the drawbacks and solve it by a nickel and dime scheme.

its briliant on their part how people even praise them for this questionable conduct.

at least some paid dlc was a idiot tax, you could get cosmetic garbage like a haircut, skin or a dumbass mount. now they allow you to buy ingame benefit and some people actually praise them for it.

Yeah it does. You can choose to unlock everything for everyone and it's pretty awesome. I believe you can also force the default kit loadouts only if you want to.

But the server had issues with people not being able to connect plus some still complained about not earning any xp and progress so it was back to no password and random jerks creeping in.

What if the stock weapons were all around the best you can use in most situations? Look at those playing BF3 competitively -- a vast majority of them are using the stock guns.

The heavily OP weapon is the FAMAS (clearly superior in mid-short range) and that's getting a nerf in the upcoming patch.

Vehicle unlocks are a completely different story. Trying being a chopper pilot without flares or ECM and you're dead in no time.

as for the a91. Haven't used it in a LONG time. I liked that gun quite a bit when i had it. Switched to the g36c.

I'm pretty much a g36c exclusive user. Great magazine clip. but i use it w/ a silencer. Keep to medium/close range and it's pretty goddamn good. At far range, switch to the 2 round burst mode and own.

the g36c is my most used engineer gun and i've got a LOT of fucking kills with it.

Yea, I'm a g18 whore. Mainly because i play recon quite a bit. But i have that suppressed version of the g18 on ALL my builds, and i'm REALLy quick on the weapon switch. So i always get plenty of kills on it.

I'm not afraid at all to run around on the ground with the G18. Because chances are, if you run up to me and i've got that gun out. You're going to die.

That and I'm also a recon/shotgun whore. Whether it be the 870mcs w/ flachettes, or the USAS w/ frag rounds.

Other than that, I mainly play engineer. But I will also change classes depending on how our team is doing. If no one is doing a goddamn thing against vehicles. I switch to engineer. I'll just focus on taking out shit and dropping land mines. You'd be surprised at how many people STILL hit your land mines since that last patch months ago that highlight them instantly.

But again, I'm a jack of all trades type of player... and i'm pretty f'n good at all the classes. My least played played class is definitely support. I normally have types of maps which i play certain classes in. Also depends on my mood at certain times on the type of map because i can play multiple classes on that map with equal success. BTW, i pretty much strictly play conquest mode.

Siene crossing is a perfect example. Normally for me that map is Assault w/ nade launchers, or a sniper w/ 8x scope. I can rape that map with either class. Honestly, can rape with that as engineer as well. But have way more fun as a sniper/assault on that map.

For grand bazaar? fuck it. Shotgun hell as a recon due to dropping spawn points for maximum flanking "fuck you, enjoy shotgun to the face" I'll gladly run around the outside of the map, drop a spawn point, flank, own 4-5 guys in a row. wash, rinse repeat. It works great on that map.

For metro conquest? I can use a shotgun on that map, but mainly go assault w/ smoke grenades. Just to smoke the fuck out of point b if I'm american side, just so i can run up the rear escalator while it's smoked, and take point A. Done this sooooooooooo many times and have brought back our team from shit, to winning. It's amazing what a little smoke grenade can do... and a recon in your squad to drop a point. If I'm Russian side? support w/ claymores and strictly, STRICTLY defending the rear escalators w/ claymores, or rocking a shotgun for any idiot that dares run up those escalators. It's easily devastating to do this. It's literally the only map where i'll strictly defend, and rarely engage on the offence... as long as i spawn as russians. If american side, i go assault w/ smoke nades and make a mad rush. Only because that map is so fucking unbalanced.

like i said. I switch my shit up depending on the map. Depending on how our team is doing.

My most played class is recon. Mainly because of shotgun ownage, that and I'm a DAMN good medium range sniper. I'm not you're typical useless sniper.

Other than that, engineer is my second most played class, because it's the most versatile. It's my "fail safe" class for ANY map. Don't matter what map it is... engineer is always a safe class to play.

I feel like a nook would be appropriate to read that post. Its harder to do those sort of tactics on the PC with a 64 player server, because people are trying to do the same thing to you. Also, I'm waggling my finger at you for usas and frags.

so don't play 64 player games on maps that can't support it.

Don't worry. notice how my 870 mcs has waaaaay more kills than the frags? Think about that for a second :P

I like the frags and the usas because of the rapid fire, and it serves it's purpose on a map like grand bazaar. Also, you can kill at MUCH LONGER ranges with that loadout compared to the 870mcs w/ flacettes.

I like the 870, because if you get a solid hit, they are dead. What kills you with that shotgun is the reload. You can take someone by surprise and kill 2 guys easily, the third kills you while you're reloading.

Where ass the USAS can fucking NUKE people from 100 meters out, and nuke people at close range. PLUS they can blow up land mines and claymores.

Also, the 870 w/ slugs can be used as a sniper rifle. No joke. THat shit can kill at a stupidly long range w/ a 8x scope. Trust me on this... try it out on a map like say kharg island. Just try it as an engineer instead of recon so you can be more useful on that larger map ;)

All maps support 64, we have on average two or tree more cap points than you on the console. The only one I would say doesn't support 64 is metro.

that is true. I'd love to play kharg island with the point B where the pc versions' point B is at.

WOuld make that map much more interesting to me.

but whenever i play that map on the 360 as a sniper. I hang between point b and c, between the 2 construction sights and snipe the fuck out of anyone that i see on the ground. To me it's pretty easy, and numerous times i'm the #1 player in the game as a sniper.

ALthough when doing that, it also helps that your own team mates are not complete total tools and can take out the tanks while my soflam can target the enemy helicopter.

it's rare when the stars align and it happens in a pub game on the 360, but it does happen, and i've been a part of it quite a bit.

but that map really depends on your team fucking up the enemy vehicles and holding the middle points.

It's just that to me in bf3, i find it hard to see how 64 players can play good on any of these maps.

I've found the pistols to be fairly effective...I tend to use my suppressed M9 a lot when I'm fucking around.

yea can't be bothered to go back to single shot pistols after mastering the g18. The only other pistol i used before that was the g17. Had great success with that pistol in the beta, and just ran with it in the full game until i unlocked the g18. Tried out a lot of other pistols along the way. But no... just can't fuck with the g18. It still amazes me at how few people use the g18 online.

Then again, i mastered the g18 in MW2. Didn't take me too long to kick ass with that gun in bf3.

Like i said. I have absolutely no fear in close combat if all i have is the g18. Because chances are i will absolutely kill you. It's my 2nd most used weapon. I use it a LOT. I kill a LOT of people with it.

Sad thing is, last few times i've played this game online on my own, the amount of sub lvl 20 n00bs really kill me.

I just recently picked up the AK74M and the RPK74M and have been using them as my mains. The AK74M is surprisingly accurate with a heavy barrel, it is excellent for short to mid range where the accuracy and recoil of the AN94 are unnecessary and hindering. Holo, foregrip and heavybarrel rocks on sein and bazaar.

the an94 is really only good to medium/short range. Just stick a grip on it, fuck the heavy barrel. It's great at those ranges due to the high rate of fire.

However, there are better guns in the range than the AN.

Hell, the g36c. Can't say anything more about it. It's the best overall gun in the engineer class IMO.

A91 with PKA, HB and foregrip lets me perform at all ranges. I've 1400~ kills on it. I tried using the QBU95B for awhile, its nice, but lacks the versatility. Nothing has really grabbed be like the A91 for engi guns. AN94 is great at med long, suppressor to drop the recoil and your choice of M145 or PKA. I can arc the burst into a sniper's face no problem, its the drop in damage at that range which makes it difficult. AN94 loses out in close range to bullet hoses like the AEK, MP7, F2000 and FAMAS if you see the other guy at the same time he sees you.

New weapons really just offer new ways to play. Here is a weapon chart so you can see what I mean:

            http://symthic.com/?s=bf3

You'll see that all the Assault rifles have similar damages, only their accuracy etc changes. The last normal medic unlock, the AN-94, is an overall harder weapon to use than the default weapons.

Then just make unlocks like planetside did with its cert system.

Get unlocks, but you can pick which ones you want. So you dont have to grind with a particular weapon/vehicle to be able to pick that vehicles unlocks. Would be perfect for the jets.

At some point (a year?), anyone buying new should be granted either a majority of weapons per class, or a few weapons with all attachments.

          No.

All of the unlocks for a class / vehicle should be available to all within 3-4 hours of gameplay within those different categories. That nearly eliminates the grind, and makes the focus more about the gameplay than leveling a meter running across the bottom of your screen. From there it will be more about personal exploration using the different loadouts, instead of just moving on to the next best thing.
