"Sim City is back."

Well, that was a pretty fast reveal. At EA's "Game Changers" event at Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, EA confirmed rumors that a new SimCity will be coming to PC and Mac. And yes, it will be coming in 2013.

"This is a 3D SimCity," EA announced. The new SimCity will take advantage of a new proprietary "GlassBox Engine" developed by Maxis that will "equip players with the tools to play the most sophisticated simulation of its kind."

"We're building a simulation that really captures the world that we live in today," EA added at its announcement event. Online functionality will have you cooperating and competing against other SimCities for the first time in the franchise's history. Decisions you make in your city will affect other players' cities--especially as the virtual world will have to deal with the repercussions of limited natural resources.

Best of all: "You never know when a giant lizard might come around... and with our new physics engine, it will look spectacular."

A trailer revealed during the press conference simply called the game "SimCity," sans a number. Could this be a "reboot" of the franchise? [Update: Yes. EA calls this "a true rebirth of the franchise."]

Oooh, a reboot. So all that heavy plot stuff that happened in I - IV is getting rolled back, huh?

I hope it gets bigger, but the way games are going these days, it'll get smaller and simpler like Civ5.

And Origin only. Plus, DLC buildings, cars, etc. I would love a new sim city game, but I'm betting this isn't it.

I guess the "not representative of actual gameplay" didn't catch your eye.

Sim games tend to be defined by their economy and interface anyway. Not really the kind of things you get a sense of from a cinematic trailer.

An upgrade and graphics overhaul from sim city 4 would make me extremely happy. Everything else is icing. Fingers crossed for this one.

derp, online only? I'm certainly interested in an online mode, but I also want a single player mode. Not terribly optimistic...

I have high hopes. It's back in the hands of Maxis and after Societies EA should know they cannot overtly changed the formula. On the other hand, I dread how the game will be monetized with DLC.

based on the "not representative of actual gameplay" along the bottom, I am relatively sure this is just a cinematic trailer. Which is to say: not gameplay assets.

Man, it would rock if that trailer was the graphics they're using. I hope its not a piece of shit like SimCity4 was, but I hope they innovate a bit. I spent HOURS on this game.

I hope they just add a feature for infinite money instead of trying to find a trainer or something. I've always just enjoyed building cities; not worrying about money management.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that caught that.

Otherwise, I hope for the best. It's been a long time since I've had a nice relaxing Sim. The Sims does not count and minecraft takes a drive that I don't always have.

Every building type will be DLC.

Disasters will be the only feature included in the box, and will require DLC to stop them from occurring every 4 days.

Also IGN will rate it 9.5 out of 10
