Awesome Games Done Quick 2019: Day 5 schedule and runs to watch

Awesome Games Done Quick is back and raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Shacknews has today's full schedule of runs and has picked out a couple that are worth watching.

19

Games Done Quick has returned to begin a new year of speedrunning for charity. Awesome Games Done Quick kicks off every January and brings together the world's best speedrunners to play through the greatest games of the past and present as quickly as possible. It's a celebration of the speedrunning community and it's one of the biggest examples of players coming together for a good cause.

This year kicks off a new era for Awesome Games Done Quick, as this year's event is being held in an all-new venue. The week takes place from the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel in Rockville, Maryland. They will be raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The event has begun and GDQ has raised over $315,000 in just two days. Shacknews is here with a handful of noteworthy runs from throughout the week that should not be missed.

Before getting into the Day 5 schedule, let's look back at a Day 4 highlight. Here's a special message from Halfcoordinated.

Here's the full schedule for Day 5, taken from the Games Done Quick website, along with a handful of noteworthy runs to check out:

3:15PM - The Messenger

The Messenger was one of the big breakout indie hits of 2018. Here, it's making its Games Done Quick debut. And given the game's retro aesthetic, it'll fit right in with the rest of the lineup. Let's see if strizer86 can finish this in under 40 minutes.

4:15PM - Dead Cells

Speaking of games that are making their Games Done Quick debut, here's Dead Cells. This is another major breakout indie hit from last year, standing out as a unique Metroidvania action game. Three runners will look to race to the game's finish in just under 20 minutes, wowing everyone in attendance and amazing those who are tens of hours in and still struggling to finish.

6:05PM - Celeste

Celeste rounds out an exciting Indie Games Done Quick block, as TGH looks to wrap up all of the game's chapters in one hour and forty minutes. Celeste proved to be an outstanding game, topping most indie game of the year lists and also making several general game of the year lists. It's also one of the most difficult games to arrive last year, so don't expect TGH to get through the run unscathed. The question is how many deaths will get piled up along the way?

Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 will take place from now through Saturday, January 12. For more, check out the Games Done Quick website and be sure to watch all of the action from Twitch. Also, be sure to check out our TwitchCon interview with GDQ's Matt Merkle.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 is in it's fifth day, having raised $645,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation!
AGDQ is a Speedrunning Marathon that will take place January 6-13th, 2019 in Rockville, MD, and is raising funds for the Prevent Cancer Foundation ( https://preventcancer.org/ ).
You can watch on https://gamesdonequick.com/ or on https://twitch.tv/gamesdonequick once it starts, and you can contribute by donating at https://gamesdonequick.com/ or making a purchase from one of their affiliated sponsors such as https://theyetee.com/collections/games-done-quick or https://www.fangamer.com/collections/games-done-quick . Additionally, any Twitch channel subs to GamesDoneQuick or bits donations all go to the charity.
Over 128 games will be played and completed as quickly as possible, including recent games like The Messenger and Dead Cells to classics like Sonic The Hedgehog and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Additionally, they aren't just playing the good games, as it seems that the awful game block returns Thursday morning. They are also returning to having the marathon end with a Super Metroid run. While 128 games may seem to be less than past GDQs, this time they are having some marathon runs, with Final Fantasy IX expected to be finished in under 9 1/2 hours, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD in under 6 hours, Nier: Automata [E] ending in under 4 1/2 hours, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in just over 4 hours.

I actually had no idea that the original metal gear had a story, much less that it's THE story they continued through the rest of the series. Today that's a safe assumption, but tons of nes and snes games in series had basically filler for story or unrelated to a series.

I'm so curious about how this dead cells race is going to go. I feel like it's way too random for this to be any kind of real competition.

Yep, the got their choice of 4-cell difficulty weapons to start with (though Church's was slightly less strong?), and they all played the same level seed with no prior knowledge of the layout. Was pretty close. Fun to watch.

It's disheartening to see for all the work TroZ is doing to keep these posts up how few people are posting or discussing this at all. It's lots of popular games run by some of the greatest players, with knowledgeable commentary on their development, history and running process, and it's raising money for a great cause. We have megathreads for some of these games, bad timing maybe? Everyone too busy or don't care?

I still enjoy the races and seeing a few new games here and there, but most of those I wind up watching the vod archive of when I have the time.

And I don't know what to say about most of them besides superficial stuff like 'that was cool' so I usually don't say anything at all. Even though I may not have the interest in these evens that I once did, TroZ's work is definitely appreciated. I hope he knows that.
