Awesome Games Done Quick 2019: Day 3 schedule and runs to watch

Awesome Games Done Quick is back and raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Shacknews has today's full schedule of runs and has picked out a couple that are worth watching.

25

The start of a new year means that Games Done Quick has returned to raise money for charity. Awesome Games Done Quick is an annual event that invites the top speedrunners in the world to run through some of the greatest games of the past and present as quickly as possible. As they break records and reveal new tricks, they'll raise money for charity in the process.

This year kicks off a new era for Awesome Games Done Quick, as this year's event is being held in an all-new venue. The week takes place from the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel in Rockville, Maryland. They will be raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. The event has begun and GDQ has raised over $315,000 in just two days. Shacknews is here with a handful of noteworthy runs from throughout the week that should not be missed.

Before getting into the Day 3 schedule, let's look back at a Day 2 highlight. Everyone has a laugh during the Castlevania block and... oof, this got dark fast.

Here's the full schedule for Day 3, taken from the Games Done Quick website, along with a handful of noteworthy runs to check out:

9:53AM - Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2

Most people who grew up in the 8-bit era are familiar with the original NES game based on the Rescue Rangers. Not as many know about the sequel, a solid game that was largely overlooked because it released on the NES years after the Super Nintendo was already out in the wild. Not only will viewers get to check out this rare gem in action, but someone's actually going to attempt to beat this by using two controllers to control both Chip and Dale.

Wait... TWO people are going to attempt this? And race each other? Ok, this sounds wild.

5:42PM - Mario Kart 64

There's been a lot of Mario Kart featured in the last couple of GDQ's. Arguably the best Mario Kart of the bunch is the Nintendo 64 version and that's what'll be on display on Tuesday night. Let's see if abney317 can plow through every track in just 35 minutes.

6:37PM - Super Mario Bros. 3mix

Those expecting the original SMB3 will want to look again. This is a ROMHack released back in 2014 and features some noteworthy changes, such as power-ups from other Mario games, some alternate exits, and new bosses. A handful of top Mario speedrunners, including mitchflowerpower, will be racing each other. And given that the Mario runners are often one of the major highlights of any GDQ, this one will be a can't-miss.

Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 will take place from now through Saturday, January 12. For more, check out the Games Done Quick website and be sure to watch all of the action from Twitch. Also, be sure to check out our TwitchCon interview with GDQ's Matt Merkle.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 is in it's third day, having raised $340,000 for the Prevent Cancer Foundation!
AGDQ is a Speedrunning Marathon that will take place January 6-13th, 2019 in Rockville, MD, and is raising funds for the Prevent Cancer Foundation ( https://preventcancer.org/ ).
You can watch on https://gamesdonequick.com/ or on https://twitch.tv/gamesdonequick once it starts, and you can contribute by donating at https://gamesdonequick.com/ or making a purchase from one of their affiliated sponsors such as https://theyetee.com/collections/games-done-quick or https://www.fangamer.com/collections/games-done-quick . Additionally, any Twitch channel subs to GamesDoneQuick or bits donations all go to the charity.
Over 128 games will be played and completed as quickly as possible, including recent games like The Messenger and Dead Cells to classics like Sonic The Hedgehog and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Additionally, they aren't just playing the good games, as it seems that the awful game block returns Thursday morning. They are also returning to having the marathon end with a Super Metroid run. While 128 games may seem to be less than past GDQs, this time they are having some marathon runs, with Final Fantasy IX expected to be finished in under 9 1/2 hours, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD in under 6 hours, Nier: Automata [E] ending in under 4 1/2 hours, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess in just over 4 hours.

I was playing Battle of Olympus with my kid on the Retropie. There is some bullshit combat in that game, where your range is like three pixels and the enemies' are much higher. That and when you do get the shield, it works only when you are standing completely still.

Same way I'd describe it, a Zelda 2 wannabe.

It's not terrible, just a bit flawed. I wonder if where I am right now (fighting a snake lady who is beating the shit out of me) is where I am supposed to be, particularly because of the range thing I've mentioned.

Who is the player on Nier's couch who seems to have an argument for every decision? That would drive me nuts to be second guessed all the time for four and a half hours.

I'm not sure who is on the couch as I work up only about an hour ago, but the people on the couch are chosen by the runner.

To be clear, this will be two people, each playing their own copy of the game, each using two controllers at the same time to play as both Chip and Dale at the same time, racing each other to complete the game first.

          Sonic Forces?
I've heard it had a mixed reception, with people who like the modern Sonic games generally liking it, but classic Sonic fans generally not liking it. Apparently a lot of the 'cool' moves aren't under your control but just happen automatically when you reach certain locations. Additionally, the character creation is liked by some but hated by others as they feel it was only put in for the " Your Name the Hedgehog" fans and your choices in the character creation basically have little effect on the game play.
