Happy Hour: Checking out the Battlefield 5 Open Beta
Today we check in with The Wolf's grandfather as he fights for both the Allies and the Axis, depending on what server the matchmaking logic dumps him into.
Without a doubt the least controversial game of 2018, Battlefield 5 has had nothing but smooth sailing ever since it was announced by EA this spring. Only a few days after EA announced the game would be delayed to November 20 from its original October launch date, we get a chance to mess around with an open beta, featuring two of the game’s maps.
On today’s episode of Happy Hour, The Wolf attempts to live out his fantasies of being part of the Greatest Generation and tries out his paws with the upcoming World War 2 shooter. As always, the day’s news and major events will be discussed and given that hot lupine spin you all know and love. The fun begins at 7:30 PM ET (4:30 PM PT) on the Official Shacknews Twitch Channel.

I played a bunch of it last night. The maps in the beta seem to still be on the smaller side of what previous games had (especially compared to BF2/2142 and even Bad Company 2) but there seems to be a lot more verticality to the maps and it definitely seems to feel a lot more like the Battlefield I remember than BF1 did. I'm still optimistic about it so far. Dealing with tanks as infantry seems really tricky especially if you have no cover as right now there's only the sticky dynamite and the mines, no kind of ranged anti-tank weapons at the moment.

I don't know if it would ever be the same without the vehicles spawning in the world.
Especially the planes at the airstrip. Part of the strategy on Wake was keeping those planes grounded until you could capture that base, whether via strafing runs, destroyer cannons, land mines, tanks, snipers, etc.

It's a double edged thing. Spawning into vehicles directly from the deploy screen means no more real vehicle camping, but it's still dumb how the aircraft materialize in the sky. And now also resupply in the air, but at least that is slightly better than the previous BF games where you didn't have to resupply at all, everything regenerated automatically.
It was a lot more interesting when they had to take off from an air strip or carrier and do a low and slow fly over to get more bombs and ammo, but I guess they think it's better to not have a bunch people just waiting around on the ground for them to spawn and not contributing to the game, or for the other side to be able to hijack them for an entire round. Same goes for tanks and such.-

Eh, they could still do the whole deploy them from the menu thing but have them take off from the ground or carrier.
All you really need is more AA flak on the carrier or at the airstrips to defend them so the other side can't easily strafe the planes trying to take off. That still kinda happens in BF1, anyway. Aircraft with nothing to do will just circle the sky near the other side's base waiting for enemy planes to spawn. And since you're just dropped in there mid-flight it can be difficult to get your bearings and avoid them.
