I certainly understand why companies like Mozilla or VideoLAN have an interest in free, open-source codecs, but the actual costs to license commercial usage of the codec are not exorbitant for small users (and likely affordable for large companies which make $$$). Obviously those companies that release free software lose the most with patented codecs. I was surprised by how little it would cost to provide videos in H264, which is the best choice out there right now for high-quality HD video content.
That said, I look forward to WebM and it'll be interesting to see if it can compete -- in quality and speed -- as Google continues to develop and push for its support. Free is hard to beat, all else being equal.
