If people continue encoding in h264 only, they will continue to ignore firefox, and now chrome. Firefox will never and never was going to implement h264. Asking makers of free software to pony up cash for mpeg-la is not really cool. Relying on a highly patented for pay format for the web is not cool. Google erred in supporting it in the first place, but it's better in the long run if the break comes sooner instead of later.
We still have to deal with webpages written for IE6 and the shit that caused, and here we go again with people being cool with this "because everyone is doing it", while ignoring the fact thqt this time they really aren't. Now (in the browser world) it's only a fading IE and the fringe (on Windows) Safari.
