Like really, the likelihood of Firefox building in h.264 support was absolutely 0. Mozilla would cease to exist rather than do that. The violence of this sentiment is part of why after years of negotiation we haven't been able to standardize HTML5 on h.264.
You're right, if everyone had agreed, it would pay dividends. At this point multiple parties believe the only chance of that agreement now lies in agreeing on WebM.
