1) It seems like it would be easier to just put pressure on MPEG LA to open up encoding and decoding tools for free. Their statement that H.264 video will be free for lifetime seems like a slap in the face to regular consumers, to be honest.
2) Why would you ever ever ever ever ever support a codec that doesn't have open AND free access to the encoding and decoding patents? That just strikes me as hanging yourself up by the balls, unless you're an inside man.
