Weekend Discussion
- Alice O'Connor: I imagine I'll continue to work my way through the Halo: Reach campaign, grumbling all the way. Monday Night Combat shall be my palate cleanser.
- Brian Leahy: This weekend I'll be playing Halo: Reach--three achievements left!---and Civilization V! I'm still waiting for the first balance patch before I jump back into StarCraft 2, but I don't think it will be this weekend.
- Garnett Lee: [Left the station to give the Covenant back their bomb.]
- Jeff Mattas: [We'll wake him, when we need him.]
- Xav de Matos: After focusing on the campaign for the first few weeks I had the game, I finally jumped into Halo: Reach multiplayer. Considering I haven't played Halo online in over a year, I think I did pretty well. When I'm not playing Reach, I'm sneaking in some time with Civilization V.

You chose a bad time to start, his server is being raped due to an update. Should be back to normal in a day or two.
While you wait, watch a couple of vids from this guy's Youtube stream: http://www.youtube.com/davidr64yt#p/u/41/4bh4EexJO4I
Or alternately have a read of http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/tag/mine-the-gap/-
Hah I just read most of this:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2010/09/14/minecraft-mine-the-gap-day-1/#more-38794
And he talks about getting the wood to make a table eventually and then using that table to assist in making a pickaxe, crazy. Still reading.

In case you missed it earlier, Castle Woodenstein is now Castle Firestein.
http://www.shackpics.com/files/Screenshot20100918at92702PM_0e5gjj0vcaklat3ysjwx.png
Mucking around with steel and flint caused the entire tree mansion to go up in smoke in a matter of seconds. In about 90 seconds, the entire thing had burnt down. I'm not sure if it was lag that caused my water to disappear or weather the fire evaporated it, it was ineffective anyway.
I was so disappointed I basically rage quit. It took me a few hours before I could go back and look at the damage. When I had returned, the fire had been put out by others on the server, and any supplies had been left for me in crates at the front of what used to be my castle. Thanks for doing that! I was amazed and even somewhat uplifted. I also now have a life-time supply of bacon!
I'm laughing about it now. The great thing with Minecraft is you can go back and build again. I'm still going to stick with wood as I liked the idea of living in the trees. But now that I know how a steel and flint works, here are some things I have learned:
1. A lava fireplace does look nice, but it is not best placed in a library made out of wood.
2. Steel and flint belongs no place near burnable material.
3. Perhaps building a frame out of less flammable material is advisable.
I also have 1 Steel & Flint up for donation.-

Hey mercfox1, I was thinking of renting a server here in order to let you be able to play a game of L4D without a shitty ping. Would you be OK with moving the world to a rented server?
Rock paper shotgun are using these guys for their server: http://main.jestservers.com/2010-05/minecraft-dedicated-servers/ And I was thinking of renting a server there for us. -

All I really did was the pathway and a few blocks above it, and maybe 6 blocks wide east of the NE path. We had another dude with us (he came after the others left at maybe 6am or so) whose name I forgot to post in the last post and has now escaped my memory who was still working when I got off and must have kept going if it's all level now. I really want to see it, but yeah the update means I'll probably be waiting until I get back home later tonight.

Well I'm thinking about doing the reallllly tall windows you can see about halfway up this pic http://www.shackpics.com/files/LOTRenviroisengardlrg_cvy2wqfh8gsfn9e2en7q.jpg
Could look badass.-

Yeah I'd noticed that too, it's gradually becoming a diamond, lol. I may forcibly fix this on the 4th level.
Re: the proportions etc, I think some creative license will have to be applied due to the low skybox. I'm thinking of doing those arch windows you see near the base (also seen here http://www.shackpics.com/files/Orthanclee_fdjsqc29z60oqc1tuzo9.jpg ) on the second level... maybe 5th + 6th for the oasis level then? -

meh, i played it awhile ago before you had to buy anything. before crafting was in. playing single player doesn't really appeal to me for this type of game. the most fun thing seems to be gettin' a bunch of dudes in a server and just makin' cock pictures all over. and maybe a slum town or something.

Foobar explained on http://www.minecraft.net/ --
Minecraft got way too popular for this humble server. I've had to disable everything fancy to even get it to run.
The following things do not work at the moment:

Purchasing the game
User verification for online servers

I was wondering if you were going to go for that! You can use the Shack as a resume booster; a huge community (that includes actual game developers as part of its user base) enthusiastically playing Minecraft, who would dutifully give actual bug reports instead of yelling about FURNACE FIX HWOOOORG.
I am going to say that about the Shack and I am going to be wrong.-
I brought up my Shack membership on my interview for my current job. And my boss-to-be knew what it was and even has an account here. >_>
But I'm hoping 3½ years as a web developer in the games industry is enough resume booster actually. ;)
I just hate writing job applications, it's so much more fun to just spend the day playing Minecraft instead. :P

Direct card payment shouldn't really be an issue, but it is some work involved to get that going.
I think Paypal already has some service that lets you send in a check that they cash and then transfer the money, I really doubt notch wants to trod to the bank and cash them in manually. :) But there's bound to be other services handling that shit for you I guess.
Any particular reason paying through Paypal (without registering an account) with your CC is disliked? I know some people stay away because they do that freezing of accounts (which happened to notch more then once) and such, but other then that?-
I'm just not too crazy about having anything to do with Paypal. They have a history of shitting on both consumers and merchants for no reason at all.
A good example is Notch accumulating a large amount of money and Paypal just not releasing it to him. Not sure about the whole story behind it, but I'm not surprised at Paypal's handling of this.
I really, really just don't care to have anything to do with Paypal.

Not to marginalize you, Shadow, but can you describe what's going on that makes it unplayable? Is it block delay? I'm trying to figure out if it's the server or the code or some tertiary thing, because every now and then it'll get pretty bad for all players, but normal operation for that is to shutdown and restart; usually after long periods of uptime leaves the server sluggish. I did that earlier today and several people said performance was improved afterwards, but if you're experiencing something particular, I'm trying to make certain that it'll be fixed come whenever we get the server moved over.
-
-
-
i was seeing this before the update, only really have problems when you get more than about 14-16 players on your server.
I think its mostly just your internet connection that is causing the lag and world loading problems. Hopefully you'll get that all sorted out soon.
I really wanted to work on the canal today, but with the update causing havoc and your server having the lag problems. It wasn't worth trying to do it today.
-
-
Here is what I'm currently seeing: http://shadowdane.shackspace.com/Minecraft/minecraft_lag.mp4
Didn't try breaking any blocks or placing anything, i had already been in the server for about 5 mins and there wasn't really any improvement as far as how fast the world was loading.-
Interesting. Ok well I've had a similar issue, but its more along the lines of being able to see through the floor into the underground caves, which is interesting because my latency to the server is <1 ms. If we get this thing moved over sometime next week, and it's still giving you issues, I'd tweet it to Notch.

That's what happened to me and I fell through the world. It sometimes happened pre update but it was only the textures that were slow to load. I could just keep walking while it loaded. Today, post update, it was happening more frequently unfortunately it was not just the textures that did not load.

Isengard/Orthanc weekend update
We're really hitting our stride now. After a team of crazy people decided to come and level not one, not two, but THREE mountains inside the walls of the castle (in a space of two days, no less) the lands of Isengard are flat. It's glorious. http://www.shackpics.com/files/Orthanc6_rsilgjsqr659kbujp5u2.jpg (Compare, if you will, to this picture posted Friday morning: http://www.shackpics.com/files/Isengard_f82mtotigmkfevrvp9g2.jpg )
Thanks to Xevo, MurraytheSkull, hscharlie (who might as well be a piece of earthmoving equipment, he dug for about 5 hours overnight on Friday), dnagenome, EricZBA, and Crabs Jarrard for all the volunteer efforts terraforming. I honestly expected that bit to take weeks.
We've been focusing our attention on the grounds mostly for the last week, and now they're starting to look pretty close to done. I finished all the paths last night, and we've planted trees in the east quadrant. Eventually, Isengard from ground level will all look something like this: http://www.shackpics.com/files/IsenPaths_wocccv6zf6iuv0g76f9q.png (We use a couple of hundred saplings per quadrant!).
Now that the grounds are looking close to done, I need somewhere high to yell GET OFF MY LAWN from, so work has resumed on Orthanc, with gusto. Xevo has been a mad building machine: http://www.shackpics.com/files/Orthanc5_cyzbnx3rrh45nm7gg0o3.png
And I've finally been able to start adding a little character to the outside walls, much more of this to come: http://www.shackpics.com/files/OrthancTrim_whszovkkk9uxaqow194u.png
Finally, outside the walls of Isengard, something wicked this way comes (thanks DHAvatar!): http://www.shackpics.com/files/Ents1_lg1j5raz6s6wf12hl267.png
http://www.shackpics.com/files/Ents2_b59kggyo26f4cmtzwh3o.jpg
Thanks to all who have volunteered on the project so far! If I've missed anyone's name, let me know -- I didn't expect such a large swell of support here. -

This "game' is interesting, lots of things to do, but no real end game or long term satisfaction pay off is there? I spent about 4 hours playing yesterday, built sprawling bases, tunnels connecting them, various weapons to kill things to get things to built more things and on and on and that was fun, still is. But for how long? People are now having fun with the meta game of building large structures that stick out on a map, which looks fun and creative. It just reminds me of Animal Crossing with the ability to build in the sense that while there's alot to do, there just not alot to do if that makes sense. None of it is meaningful towards building a climax for an end game. And yet, I can't stop thinking of how I can improve my base or explore other areas. Interesting game.
-
-
Right and I think it's got tons of potential. It also reminds me of LBP as it's strength lies not so much in it's own gameplay but the gameplay others come up with based on it's tools and structure. The most fun I had in LBP was checking out other people's creations. I am sure it's going to turn into something majorly cool and evolve.
Does Minecraft MP allow you to show off things you've built like LBP or is it essentially just a randomized map everyone can join in and fuck around with? -
-
-
-
-
-
-
Multiplayer has a lot of promise, but it still has a ways to go. I'm perfectly content to enjoy SP for now and then return to MP later after it's gone through a few more upgrades. $13 for an amazing game built by a single developer was a no-brainer. And now that he's got the cash, Notch can afford to -- and is currently very much in the process of -- ramp up on the staff to support his game.

It's not the map backups, it's the render copies. The backup was 4 hours old, and took the same amount of time to write to disk, so it's a wash when I want to take a nonvolatile backup.
Also RAMDisk blows because passingstranger's autosave script gives me a 30 minute rollback point even if the power goes out. Having the program in RAM blows it all away, it's a bad solution.
In effect, I get faster write speeds (you guys don't see that anyways) in exchange for volatile storage. No deal. Not using RAMDisk anymore.-
I don't understand. You are saying ramdisk blows because you stored your backups on it instead of on a hard drive? If your map is over 100mb, the rysnc cuts your backup time by a large margin, and if you run the server from a ramdisk and backup to a hdd it cuts your backup time by nearly 1/3. That's fine you don't wanna use ramdisk, but blaming your problems now on ramdisk is like you blaming your problems earlier on explorers.
-
-
-
-
-
But you said you didn't have backups on the ram drive fox. You need to make up your mind. Are their backups on the ram drive or are they just render backups? If they are actual server backups, why on earth would you store them on the ram drive instead of saving them on the hdd or copying to the hdd?
-
-
-
You shouldn't run a map render on the live server, so people have been making backups and running them off those. My server, for example, has a 250 megabyte map running off a ramdisk that I backup using rsync. It takes 4-7 minutes to backup depending on how many changes have been made. I then run a render off the backup, which takes maybe 15-20 minutes.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
I don't give a flying fuck about server designations. I find it hilarious when 3 other people have made servers that are all better run than his and they rarely even get recognition. Then he keeps fucking up and blaming it on other shit? Official indeed. I still have people bitch at me about map exploring thinking it causes problems.
-
-
-
He is just pissy that his server isn't the "official" shack server... Mercfox has been running Minecraft servers since well before SMP even hit. And well if AgentPothead had gotten up a SMP server before Mercfox. I bet his would of been the main server.
No one knew really what caused the problems on Mercfox's server when he started having corruption problems. I'm sure AgentPothead would of had the exact same problems if his server would of been primary server. People would of demanded renders just the same and we would of had the exact same problems no matter who was running the main server.
No one had a frame of reference with the server software... it was all trial by fire.
-
That's bullshit Shadowdane. The map corruption was caused by him running a render on a live server while people were on it. If you guys wanna back him up, tha'ts fine. But at least know what was actually happening. That's my biggest beef is that people keep jumping to his defense, when it's obvious he's the one causing the problems his server is having.

well part of that is the game has to generate the world on the fly at least when your exploring... any other game just displays pre-created content. In areas I've already explored it runs great for me usually 200-400fps actually.
Of course multiplayer performance is another thing entirely, the netcode is spotty at best. -
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
From what I've seen the server is very hard disk intensive, makes a lot of writes to the disk. CPU & Memory usage isn't that bad really about 400-600MB usage usually. Everything I've read says 1GB available for 20 players. I'm sure with larger maps it uses more, but the map for my server is only about 35MB currently. And as we've seen on Mercfox1's server 1mbps upstream isn't enough for a 20 player server.
A single player averages about ~15kb/sec when moving around a lot or making changes to the world. So you'd want at least 2.5-3Mbps upstream available to host a 20 player server. Anything less and everyone gets a lot of lag. -

Yeah, agreed. Just never thought anyone would take this game that seriously. I mean I like it and it's fun...but there's literally no skill, competition or anything involved. It's a game where you make graph paper genitals. Donno. Just feels like jumping someone over Minesweeper to me.

Offline. The server froze up so I restarted it. Noticed the electrical fire smell, cracked open the side and the video card had multiple fires on it and it had started to melt the wire harnessing. I've gotten it back up with another video card, but apparently the hdd was toasted it keeps asking for a boot sector :/

There were 3 capacitors on fire and one of them was very close to the main power supply wire harness so it melted it a bit. Yeah I know yer kidding :P I don't think he'd do anything like that anyway. Got hit with some minor griefing last week when the other servers did too. This happened sometime between the 16th and the 18th though, and it is a lot worse than flooding somebodies house. They basically set tnt off alllll over and then covered what they had blown up with lava and water. I see some random names in the logs, but it doesn't log placing of tnt, only people who use the /give.

The inventory is still very hackable, it's mad easy to pop into a server with an inventory filled to the brim with anything you like. The server logs /give and I didn't notice anything in there, but I did notice a couple new names that I didn't recognize. It doesn't log placement though, and with this unverified weekend, somebody could show up under any name they like with anything they want in their inventory. Short of nerfing the TNT at serverside there is nothing you can do. I hate to have to nerf the game for real players just because some loser wants to try and ruin things. I even made a /warp tnt where all the regulars go to let tnt off, so that is another finger pointing at a random joiner.

It was nothing huge. http://agentpothead.com/nomoon.png But it was ours :( Peetabix did most of it and me and GenericUser helped him finish it off.

Just lost all my gear after a spelunking death followed by a java crash. Fortunately, only lost a diamond sword, ~50 arrows and feathers, compass, ~50 wheat, ~6 newfound steel ore, 2 buckets, 64 tree saplings, bunch of tree stumps, planks, and sticks, maybe 10 ladders.
Point is, don't carry all your shit on you. All of my gear was easily replaceable. -

Orthanc / Isengard Indoor Oasis
So for the 5th floor of the tower, we built it double high and put in a grass floor with the intention of growing trees there. Tonight, I got one quadrant done.
Here's the initial layout, I've found super-seeding saplings like this leads to the best results in tight spaces -- http://www.shackpics.com/files/OrthancIndoorOasis1_y16voxb3hjl03wxo5p1z.jpg
Ooh my first tree popped in, exciting -- http://www.shackpics.com/files/OrthancIndoorOasis2_qhwc3n9o519rzgwcvizx.jpg
So then a couple more showed up, and I don't have a screenshot of it but for awhile there were 4-5 trees and I though "well, this looks ok." Then, this happened -- http://www.shackpics.com/files/OrthancIndoorOasis3_0syinnv8qbck87skeohj.jpg
This is the kind of crazy shit that happens with super-seeding, the tree to the right of me has a natural trunk that is 2x2 -- http://www.shackpics.com/files/OrthancIndoorOasis4_5ji1gz2rhq0c3y0j5v85.jpg
And looking up from the one semi-clear corner, you can see the branches go all the way up, stopping only at the dirt roof that was the temporary next floor -- http://www.shackpics.com/files/OrthancIndoorOasis5_sjnsoojf36uiq3ibc7nj.jpg -
