Halo: Spartan Assault gets controller support on August 29

Halo: Spartan Assault gets controller support on August 29

Halo: Spartan Assault--the first official Halo game on PC in eons--shipped without any support for Xbox 360 controllers. It was an especially odd decision, given that the game was a twin-stick shooter. That glaring oversight is being addressed in a new title update coming August 29th.

Dubbed "Operation Hydra," the free update not only adds support for wired Xbox 360 controllers, but it also adds five new missions to the Windows 8 game.

Halo: Spartan Assault coming to PC and mobile as Windows 8 app

Halo: Spartan Assault coming to PC and mobile as Windows 8 app

Halo is coming back to PC... but not in the way you may have wanted. Six years after Microsoft shipped Halo 2 for Windows, the company is finally prepping another Halo title for the platform. Halo: Spartan Assault is a brand new adventure set between the events of Halo 3 and 4 that's debuting exclusively on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.

Although a new game, this is not a AAA production in line with the mainline Halo games. Instead, it's a downloadable app from the Windows Store, a top-down twin stick arcade shooter.

Skulls of the Shogun review: no bones to pick

Skulls of the Shogun review: no bones to pick

Back in 2009, in a small cafe in Culver City--peripheral to that year's IndieCade festival--a friendly, deep-voiced indie developer named Borut Pfeifer gave me my first taste of Skulls of the Shogun, a vibrant and colorful turn-based strategy in which rival teams of undead samurai would beat the tar out of each other. It was a very early build running on a laptop, but was more than enough to get the neglected turn-based strategy gamer in me to sit up and take notice.

As I sat down last week to begin playing through the game for this review, I really hoped that developer 17-Bit Studios--formerly Haunted Temple Studios--could live up to the growing expectations they'd built up over several years of development.

World Series of Poker: Full House Pro announced for XBLA, Windows 8

"Gotta win 'em all, poker man!" That's how I'd market a poker game, anyway. But Microsoft, for whatever reason, has instead chosen to buddy up with the World Series of Poker to slap its name on an official poke 'em up for Xbox Live Arcade and Windows 8. Coming this Spring, World Series of Poker: Full House Pro will be free-to-play.

The Wavy Tube Man Chronicles standing alone on Windows 8

The Wavy Tube Man Chronicles standing alone on Windows 8

One of the world's finest downloadable content releases is The Wavy Tube Man Chronicles, The Gunstringer's gleefully silly Mad Dog McCree-style interactive gunslinger movie starring Troma mastermind Lloyd Kaufman. The Wavy Tube Man cannot be constrained by mere platforms and DLC shackles, though, and is breaking out onto Windows 8 in a standalone release.

Notch refuses to help certify Minecraft for Windows 8

Notch refuses to help certify Minecraft for Windows 8

Windows 8 has already received a fair bit of criticism for its new Windows Store app marketplace, which some developers have interpreted as a move to make Windows PCs a more closed platform. Popular indie developer Markus "Notch" Persson, the creator of Minecraft, has now lodged his own complaint -- by refusing to help put Minecraft on the OS.

Windows RT to support Unreal Engine 3

Unreal Engine 3 continues to expand its reach to new devices. Epic Games has announced that the ubiquitous multiplatform engine will be available on Windows RT when it launches later this year.

For the uninitiated, Windows RT is a version of Windows 8 that will run on ARM devices, such as tablets and Surface. Unlike Windows 8, RT will only run software available through the Windows Store, making it more like iOS than previous versions of Windows.
