Does This Song Suck? Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia

It's time for everyone's favorite series of Shacknews Cortex articles. Today we discuss Green Day - Jesus of Suburbia.

the man with the briefcase

Today, I continue posting random songs to this Cortex platform to ask Shackers the same question. Does this song suck? Today's song is Green Day's "Jesus of Suburbia."

Reasons it might suck:

  • Do punks really sing about Jesus?
  • Suburbia is not something to fetishize
    • This is like the opposite of the Dead Kennedy's song "This Could Be Anywhere"
  • The song is schizophrenic as fuck
    • pick a side, Green day, we are at war
  • Ooooh harmonies make me want to punch something
  • Some of these lyrics are terrible:
    • I read the graffiti in the bathroom stall
      • Like the holy scriptures of a shopping mall
        • And so it seemed to confess
          • It didn't say much but it only confirmed that
            • The center of the earth is the end of the world
              • And I could really care less
    • At the center of the Earth in the parking lot
      • Of the 7-11 where I was taught
        • The motto was just a lie
  • Remember when these guys were punk?
  • That piano breakdown borders on emo trash
  • This whole album toes the pop-punk-emo-trash line, and I am not here for it
  • I can tell how much I am going to hate a Green Day song by checking out how much eyeliner their lead singer has on

Reasons it might not suck:

  • The actual song is well-produced
  • Some parts of the song sound sort of punk
  • Some of these lyrics are okay, I guess:
    • Everyone is so full of shit
      • Born and raised by hypocrites
        • Hearts recycled but never saved
          • From the cradle to the grave
    • We are the kids of war and peace
      • From Anaheim to the middle east
        • We are the stories and disciples of
          • The Jesus of Suburbia
  • Tre Cool is still a good drummer
  • It's a better song than "Wake Me Up When September Ends"

Here's a live performance of the song in case you need more intel before you make a decision:

Did you notice all of those people waving their arms in unison? Bleh...

For that reason, I am out.
For that reason, I am out.

Just yikes.

The question I pose to you, Shacknews... Does this song suck?

Doesn't suck. Far from perfect, but listening to it reminded me how much I used to enjoy it. It gets a pass on nostalgia for me alone. Also, it's like nine minutes long and I appreciate a song that takes me on a big ass journey.

Points against it are that hair, and it didn't release in the 90s. But it still gets a passing grade from me.

This was the song I was playing on KOCK when I got my permaban notification so it sucked for me for a long time.

But... I really like the Broadway Musical version of it:

Always liked it. Was a really fun concept album that revived Green Day's career after their acoustic guitar backed "Warning" album which was way more MEH.

Also, I randomly found this dude on Youtube a couple months ago. Saw the title of the video and watched. If you're a drummer or into drumming videos, check this dude out:

Sucks, hate it. Sounds like shitty Billy Joel imitation. Dookie was their only good album.

Song itself is ok, album as a whole was great, and reflected the times.

Doesn't suck. It's kind of like a punk-inspired Bohemian Rhapsody.

One of the few concerts I've been to.

Ironically though, I don't really know this song... so.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Lets just say this is far far far from any of my favorite Green Day songs.

YZ's "The Return Of The Holy One" makes all this tripe irrelevant. "ONCE AGAIN!"
