I've seen two movies for the first time since we last convened for MOVIE MONDAY.
War Horse - This is one of only a handful of Spielberg’s films I haven’t seen. It was fine, I guess. It was a very traditional, old-school Hollywood adventure drama. I’m not sure why Spielberg felt like he had to make this specific movie, because the overall gist of the story and the way it was focused on an animal honestly felt like something from a lesser filmmaker. It doesn’t quite reach the unbearable sentimentality of something like Always, but the gee-whiz earnestness of the premise feels like an uncomfortable fit with the absolute disaster that was the first World War. There’s a great cast here and they’re making the most of it, and I even liked some moments despite recognizing how overtly manipulative they were. Still, this is not a great movie.
Flash Gordon - Yes, believe it or not I had yet to see this cult classic space opera. This movie was campy, ridiculous, bizarre, and actually pretty damned fun. Flash himself is a total doof, and I must say I’m not certain how much of that was intentional, but in general the filmmakers here completely embraced the operatic nonsense of the premise and pretty much played it as a straight action/adventure. Also, I loved the completely nutso art direction and it seems evident that this film was a big influence on Taika Waitit’s Thor Ragnarok. It made me really want to see an updated but similar take on Masters of the Universe. There’s some clearly outdated stuff like how some of the female characters are treated and whatnot, but my only real disappointment with this film is that I was expecting more Queen music.
And, the usual MOVIE MONDAY thing:
1. Name a movie. Any movie. If I've seen it, I'll briefly tell you what I think about it. I'm sure you're dying to know.
2. If you want, we can then dig deeper in our agreement/disagreement about said movie
