Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is preparing to strike next month, but with a few weeks to go before its release, it looks like EA and PopCap would like to test out the game's online capabilities a little early. That's why there's a public multiplayer beta lined up, set to kick off next Thursday.

Players will get a chance to check out a piece of the Backyard Battleground, which acts as the game's central hub. Dynamic events will take place there, in addition to connecting players to maps and game modes. Upon jumping into the game, the Plant players can select Rose, Citron, and Kernal Corn, while the Zombie side will get Imp (with his Grass Effect Z7-Mech also available), Super Brainz, and Captain Deadbeard. Sessions will support up to 24 players across classic and debuting game modes, set on four new maps.

The beta will available to console players, so Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners will want to check their respective marketplaces next week. The Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 multiplayer beta will run from January 14-18, with the full game set to release on February 23. More information can be found on the game's beta page.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

      No PC in the beta.

      This bodes poorly.

No bad juju from you, I've had the deluxe edition pre-ordered since Nov. I never do that. Logged so much time into the first one. I'm not too upset about no beta PC since I never play the darn things anyway.

I really like the first one and I am only worried that the lack of PC beta means we will just get ported support and online presence. That’s all. I imagine the core game will be fine for us.

Can not wait to get this, the fact they they went over and above to make a shit load of content for solo player and know they exist is really awesome. You don't even need to play the game with anyone and it will still be rad that is pretty cool.

PVZ GW 1 is my all-time favorite online multiplayer game. I own both the Xbox One and PC versions. Sadly the PC version has always had tiny numbers of players playing online even during prime time hours. Every mode other than Welcome Mat and Garden OPS is virtually always empty. Maybe this is why they are skipping the PC Beta. Also Titan Fall has the same problem. :(
