Starsector trailer shows top-down fleet action

Building up your own fleet of customised spaceships, recruiting crews, trading goods, and blowing the merry heck of enemy fleets in top-down tactical battles sounds pretty great. "That Alice," a rhetorical device mutters, "off daydreaming again!" But no, this is a real video game and I'm not simply pouring whimsy into a text box. A new Starsector trailer warped in yesterday, showing just those sorts of galactic lovelies.

Developer Fractal Softworks describes Starsector as an "open-world single-player space-combat, roleplaying, exploration and economic game," which may not sound snappy but does sound nice. It drops you into a procedurally-generated sector of space to find fame and fortune as you see fit, and maybe decide the future of the area. It's pretty dang pretty, too.

Instant alpha access is on offer if you pre-order now for $10, half the price of the finished game. It's coming to PC, Mac, and Linux. Hit the official site for more info.

        Used to be Starfarer.

Awesome game, though still pretty barebones last I played - it's been getting regular updates and is going to 0wn!!!

The only thing that changed is the name. I'm pretty sure you're still considered to have bought the game.

This flux and shields mechanic is pretty neat. You really have to juggle offense vs defense.

This game is sorta Mount and Blade in Space. You start as a small fish, take on other small fish, and hopefully grow. It's just a small sandbox right now, but I burnt dozens of hours on it anyhow.

i played the crap out of the original mount and blade, and now im playing the crap out of star sector. your comparison is spot on, and i love both games for the way they handle sandbox style gameplay and army building etc.

        great fun.

the game is readily moddable, I recommend "Uomoz's Corvus" http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=1799.0 to get a good sampling of some of the fan-made factions that are the most impressive.

Pretty much the best faction is Blackrock Drive Yards. Cycerin's work has been pretty amazing so far with both the feel of the ships and look.

I agree. The ships in Blackrock look glorious, and care is taken to give everything character. I'd put that faction in the same tier of quality as the Hegemony, Tri-Tach, etc. from the vanilla game.

We should suggest that they roll Blackrock into core somehow.

How would you lose it if you have the full installer on your computer? You can copy it as many times as you like.

i wouldn't worry about that at all with this specific game. the dev is very helpful and active, and he has it set up that after installing it once, you can lose everything off that computer and you can just download the installer from the website wtih one click and it works fine with no hassle.
