The newest DLC character to join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate comes from Square Enix, but it's not the one players might have expected. It's The Hero from Dragon Quest 11.

Tuesday's Nintendo Direct for E3 2019 kicked off with a look at the next character set to join the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. Some expected an Xbox character, while others expected a certain character from the Square Enix library. The latter are right, but it's not quite the character they might have expected. It's The Hero, the protagonist from Dragon Quest 11.

The Hero brings his sword into battle, able to knock opponents into the air and parry incoming blows. He'll also have the power of the elements at his disposal, making him every bit as formidable a sword fighter as anyone from the Fire Emblem series. His abilities include Kamikaze Slash, Bounce, Snooze, and other moves that appear to be pulled out from an old-school JRPG battle menu. For those who are more old school Dragon Quest players, The Hero will get a palette swap option with other protagonists from classic Dragon Quest games.

This will help build to the upcoming release of Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age Definitive Edition. Revealed earlier this year, it is set to release on Nintendo Switch on September 27. The Hero will be ready for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate this summer. He'll come as part of the Fighter Pass, which is available for $24.99.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
