Todd Howard to Fallout 76 fans: "Impressed you're still here"

Todd Howard had a few things to say about the last year at Bethesda Games Studio, and it has fans reacting to his snark.

The Bethesda E3 2019 Showcase is wrapped up, but some fans are talking about Todd Howard's brief appearance on stage. "We have had an incredibly exciting year at Bethesda Games Studios. Given some of that excitement, impressed you're still here." This was clearly directed to Fallout fans who did not have the best reception to Fallout 76's release last year. Please take a look.

Howard had already let Bethesda fans know that Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6 would be skipping E3 2019. Bethesda Games Studios did have a whole gang of announcements for TESL fans, though as the company revealed The Elder Scrolls Online Dragonhold expansion. The fourth chapter of the Season of the Dragon brings fire-breathing dragons and all that good stuff. That wasn't all for TESL fans as the mobile game Blades is heading to Nintendo Switch this fall. Fallout 76 players did get some news in the form of a new Wastelanders DLC and a Nuclear Winter battle royale mode coming later this year.

Fallout 76 is getting a battle royale mode.
Fallout 76 is getting a battle royale mode.

Howard boasted that Bethesda Games Studios has over 60 million players across their intellectual properties, which is a company record. He went on to say that Fallout 76 had a lot of difficulties at launch and "we got a lot of very well-deserved criticism." He continued, "We made a post-apocaltypic survival game where you can do whatever you want and everybody's nice to each other. They don't go on killing/griefing sprees. They leave food and water for the newbies and wave to each other. I don't know about you, this should give us all hope for humanity when the apocalypse does come."

Seems like old Todd has been able to look on the bright side of things surrounding Fallout 76 development, as he praised his community of players. He is clearly "impressed" by the loyalty of Fallout fans, even if some of them aren't super jazzed about how Fallout 76 turned out.

... the game was sold for money and it was borderline unplayable.

Joseph Anderson had to make a separate video, over an hour long, just talking strictly about the bugs he encountered.

With modern consoles and stuff like shadowplay it's very easy to make glitch/bug compilations for pretty much any game. Fallout 76 was definitely glitchy at release but they fixed a ton of the bugs really soon after release and the game was definitely playable. I only had one crash to desktop in about 40 hours of gameplay.

Yeah, maybe really play the game instead of getting your info from some youtubers who will hapily jump on any currently hip hatetrain if it gives them views. I have played for many hours and encountered no major bugs, had connection issues maybe ones, and generally had fun, just like many other people who like the game. Sure there is some jank here and there, like in every other Bethesda game, but you having such a beef with a game you know not much about is really strange.

                      Man.

                      I just think that...

if you go out on a stage one year and make large promises and claims about a game...

...and then when charge full price for it...

...release the game when it's in a state you KNOW is broken or incomplete...

...and furthermore, deliver inferior, falsely-advertised products to your highest paying customers...

...expose their information on accident when trying to collect their information to correct the issue...

...I would hope that, the following year, you show a little bit of remorse for the people you wrong? Like, just a little?

There was SOME humility in the form of "Thanks for sticking with us!" but no actual "and we're really sorry that we didn't deliver what we said we would."

But I'm the crazy one? FFS.

Internet reaction to Fallout 76 was greaty, greatly exaggerated. Marketing fuck ups like with the bags didn't help but I don't see why Todd should apologize for anythong on E3 stage. It is his right to release a dud from time to time, it's normal. And this dud found its audience anyway.
The game was not broken or incomplete on release, it was just mediocre and disappointing. Stop watching this garbage from entitled "influencers".

Joseph Anderson had a lengthy 2 hour breakdown of all his bugs that, if nothing else, could be seen as informative or at least interesting from a QA perspective.

He didn't dislike the game, either. For him, after a while, the bugs and overall jankiness reached a critical mass where he felt compelled to play just to see what low bar the game would try to limbo under next. It's an admirable attitude, really. Probably not one if I had paid money for the game--let alone full price--but admirable nonetheless.

That sucks and everybody is entitled to their opinion of the game, I just think it's silly to expect an apology to the point to saying it's "messed up" that he didn't apologize. Not to mention the fact that they were very transparent about features (or lack thereof) and how the game was going to play for months before the game released, and at release people still acted surprised about things they would have known about had they done their due diligence in finding out information about the game before purchasing it.
