Piranha Plant Super Smash Bros Ultimate pre order bonus

Now that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has arrived on the Nintendo Switch, players who pre-ordered the game can enjoy a little bit of bonus DLC in the form of the Piranha Plant character. Though it's only a timed exclusive for now, those who placed a Smash Ultimate pre order can download the character if they so choose. Here's how to claim and download the bonus Piranha Plant DLC character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

How to get the Piranha Plant Smash Ultimate Bonus DLC character

The Piranha Plant DLC character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available to all early buyers of the game who register their copy before January 31, 2019. It's technically not a pre-order bonus, as it's available to both pre-order buyers and relatively early adopters of the game. It's open to anyone and everyone who purchases and registers the game before January 31. Nintendo has said in a previous Nintendo Direct presentation that Piranha Plant will land in the game in the months following release, which means it should be available to use sometime in January of February.

To unlock the Piranha Plant character in Smash Ultimate, press the Switch Joy-Con's plus button while highlighting the game on the Home screen. From there, select the My Nintendo Rewards option, then go through the process of registering the title. Once that's been done, Nintendo will send an email out with the code needed to download the character.

Smash Ultimate players who opted to buy the digital version of the game won't have to register the game at all. That will be done automatically by the Nintendo Switch system. In that case, they should receive an email from Nintendo with instructions on how to download and activate the Piranha Plant character shortly after purchase. In either case, the character download code must be redeemed by June 30, 2019. After that, the code will no longer be usable.

Fans of the Super Smash Bros. series who want to stay on top of the latest Smash Ultimate fighters also have the option to earn the Piranha Plant character as part of the Fighters Pass. This DLC pass costs $25 bucks and guarantees access to all future Smash Ultimate DLC characters as well as their music tracks and individual stages. Aside from the Piranha Plant, however, we don't yet know which characters are planned on being introduced into the mix.
