I would pretty much ONLY play this in handheld mode since ialready have it on PC and PS4. Need to hear some impressions regarding playabilty with the controls and also performance.

At 30fps this is just shit. They shouldn't do it this way. Instead this needed reengineered levels that can hit 60fps on Switch hardware or a hard cancellation.

Not just a cancellation, but a hard cancellation. The hardest.

I'm sure there are plenty of people perfectly happy with 30fps.

the people that require 60FPS will not be buying this on switch, so it's an entirely new audience.

Honestly I'm fine with that.. if you want 60fps play it on PC or a different console.

        October 16, 2017 9:34 AM

But that would require actual work and justify the $60 price tag

Ok well they did the “re-engineered” levels thing (read: cut down) on the Atari Jaguar with the original and everyone hated it. And they did the same thing with DOOM 3 on the Xbox and everyone hated it.

It’s better to have the full experience at a cost of frame rate and fidelity than nothing at all. It’s not like it hasn’t had a solid year and a half out there with the best possible experience (a capable PC).

Honestly the idea of a portable version of DOOM with physical controls is just awesome to me.

Plus DOOM coming to unconventional hardware is a tradition. They got the original running on the Super Nintendo for fucks sake.

No he's saying "portable" usually involves a virtual controller on a phone or tablet.

Yeah with the power of the iPhone 8 or X hardware I bet it could run a 60fps pixel perfect version of DOOM if the work was done to make it happen. But you’d either need some awkward Bluetooth controller solution or you’d use the controls on the screen and I just don’t think it would work.

Actually, the Doom 3 xbox port received fairly good reviews.

True, but a criticism of it was the cut down levels.

Carmack referenced it in the amount of effort it took to get the thing running on the Mac because they didn’t want to use the cut-down levels from the Xbox version because of the negative feedback.

30fps is better than a hard cancellation by any stretch of the imagination. It particularly sucks for DooM but it's also not the end of the world here.

Crank up the motion blur, ensure a constant 33.33ms frame time and it'd actually pretty decent for a small handheld screen. Despite being billed as a fast action shooter, Doom is really not that fast until you get some upgrades that boost your movement speed after glory kills and such, and those buffs are brief.

30fps is fine for single player game like that on the go, 60 would be amazing but still impressive it works at all.

Its not ideal. I wonder what they would have gotten if they'd pulled back the visual effects like depth of field and everything.

This would probably have been a lot of work to implement but a 30fps mode with all the visual bells and whistles on and a 60fps mode with stripped down graphics would have been cool (if that's possible by stripping things back ofc)

When I got my Vega 56 I saw that I could do downsampling from 5K so obviously I tried it with Doom. 30 fps at max settings!
I agree that's just shit but there are degrees of shittiness. They did the input right so it's not tied to fps, it looked visually bad to me but I could still play it quite well, console players will probably think nothing of it.

nintendo outta pay them or help them add it, it's so much better. Folks play on another system and then think why the hell they wouldn't but the rest of their shooters on the switch because the controls are so much better.

I beat Mario+Rabbids, and it's a great game. I really enjoyed it. I have almost 100% it, and there are some real tough bonus challenges that I enjoyed. Plus, there's like 25 co-op battles you can play with a friend that are a lot of fun too. I would definitely recommend it.
