Xbox One X Will Download 4K Assets Automatically, Even if You Don't Need Them

Microsoft said it is giving developers tools to make downloads more efficient between the various Xbox One consoles.

The Xbox One X will give you wonderful 4K resolution for your games when it comes out November 7, providing you have the TV to support it. But, even if you don't, be prepared to use up a bit more of that 1TB hard drive, as the Xbox One X will always download 4K assets when they are available.

"With the launch of Xbox One X, when it comes to game content our intention is to download the correct assets to the correct console," a Microsoft rep told Stevivor. "This means, regardless of the TV you are playing on, 4K assets will be downloaded to Xbox One X (if available) and the standard 1080p assets will be downloaded to an Xbox One S."

That means 100GB of data for Forza Motorsport 7 for the Xbox One X, while Xbox One and Xbox One S downloads will be significantly less as they only will be using the 1080p assets. Creative director Dan Greenawalt talked to Shacknews at E3 about how the new Forza was initially created with PC in mind before moving it to Xbox One X development. You can see the full interview below.

Microsoft said that it will be up to the developers to determine how they set up downloads for their game, but Microsoft has "made available a feature which will give them significant flexibility when it comes to what gets installed on a user’s console."

So if I don't want to eat my bandwidth with that download, I have no choice?

I imagine the Venn diagram slice that contains both "Xbox 1X owners" and "Not interested in 4K assets" is very small.

I think a lot of us are more interested in 60fps than 4K.

I would buy it just for framerate. I am more interested in high framerate and faster loads than 4K.

Well that's just great. Hopefully we can opt out after the bandwidth cap rages commence.

That's going to fill up that 1TB disk really fast.

I don't understand why you would not need them. I mean are they making assets now designed for use with a later arriving console even more powerful than the X-One-X?
It's like Deep Thought not having the capability to answer The Question, but designing the computer to follow it which will.

Yup. MS also said they will super sample on 1080p screens, so you'll probably still use 4k assets regardless of screen.

Oooooooh! I didn't even consider that the display couldn't handle it. Mine certainly couldn't!

          Correct.

Even if you only have a 1080p screen each frame will be rendered in 4k with 4k assets and then super sample the frame for display in 1080p.

Rendered in 4k with 4k assets and then super sampled to 1080p will look so much better than rendered in 1080p with 1080p assets and then shown in 1080p.

PS4 Pro does the same, no? Why is this news?

That's ridiculous, they should have shipped with a 2TB hard drive if there is no way to opt out.

Why would you opt out if you own a Xbox One X and a 1080p Tv?
