Sly Cooper stars in new animated CG movie, coming to theaters in 2016

Sly Cooper stars in new animated CG movie, coming to theaters in 2016

Hollywood production company Blockade Entertainment has been quietly working on CG adaptations of many of Sony's popular game franchises, like Heavenly Sword and Ratchet & Clank, coming to theaters in 2015. However, Blockade is far from done. They're also working on a Sly Cooper movie, one which will be ready for theatrical release in 2016.

Vancouver-based Rainmaker is handling the bulk of the CGI work and Blockade is working closely with Sucker Punch, just as it is with the key developers of each franchise it has acquired to date. Brad Foxhoven is co-founder of Blockade Entertainment and producer on each of these game-to-film adaptations. He talks about what's in store for Sly Cooper fans when the film hits theaters in early 2016.

Sony releases PS3/Vita port onto iOS & Android with Bentley's Hackpack

Sony has dabbled in a few mobile experiments, including weird promotional stuff, the PlayStation App, and most recently, a tie-in game for Knack. However, is this the first time they've released an actual port of a first-party game onto iOS and Android? Seems like it.

Sly Collection rated for Vita

Sly Collection rated for Vita

Sly Cooper appears to be making another trip onto Sony's handheld. The Sly Collection was released on the PlayStation 3 in 2010, and served to prove Sanzaru's Cooper bona fides before they developed this year's Thieves in Time. The game has now been rated for Vita as well.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time review: Saturday morning spectacular

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time review: Saturday morning spectacular

Fans are a fickle bunch, rarely accepting of change. Dare to give a character a new haircut, or hire a new voice actor, and they'll parade forums, threatening boycotts and other general nastiness. But, stick too closely to an established formula, and gamers will complain of staleness. How does a developer find that delicate balance when creating a sequel?

Developer Sanzaru Games has an even more difficult task at hand. The Sly Cooper franchise has been dormant for over seven years, and the original trilogy has been placed on a pedestal for many. To make matters worse, how can a new developer take over the reigns from now-Infamous developer, Sucker Punch? Although Thieves in Time has all these handicaps going against it, Sanzaru Games not only makes a sequel befitting of the franchise, but raises the bar. Sly 4 isn't just a love letter to fans--it is one of the finest platformers to ever grace a PlayStation system.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time preview: stealing the show

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time preview: stealing the show

It's been seven years since Sly Cooper and the gang went on a new adventure. For many fans, getting any sequel would be acceptable. For a while now, Sanzaru's Thieves in Time felt like it was providing exactly that: a sequel that stuck very close to Sucker Punch's original trilogy. While it was serviceable, it didn't feel like a sequel that was worthy of the seven-year wait.

The newest build of Sly 4 has completely changed my opinion of the game. This isn't just a good Sly game; it has the potential to be one of the best.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time preview

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time preview

Fans have been waiting a long time for a proper Sly Cooper sequel. Sanzaru Games, the developers of the Sly HD Collection, have been working on an original title. Thieves in Time makes good on Bentley's promise at the end of Sly 3, creating a time machine that opens up all sorts of time-traveling antics for Sly and the gang.

Apparently, Sly Cooper has quite the diverse genetic history--one that rivals Desmond from Assassin's Creed. For example, the gang goes back to see Sir Galleth, one of the earliest members of the Cooper Clan.

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time coming to Vita

Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time coming to Vita

One of the more intriguing features of the Vita is its ability to cross-play games from the PS3. So far, only a few titles have launched on both platforms: MLB 12 The Show and MotorStorm RC, for example. However, Sony has just announced a pretty big addition to the Vita: the next Sly Cooper game, Thieves in Time.
