Lake Cushman and Mt. Rose trail - December 31, 2020

I needed some more nature therapy, so I went for a drive and a little hike.

Nixx2004

Another cloudy winter day in Washington. No views of the mountains, so I went to the forest. I went to Lake Cushman, at the SE corner of the Olympic Mountains. It was a mostly overcast day, but the sun actually came out for awhile, and there were some sunrise colors. First picture of the day is at 7:38 AM, but it's grey and boring. After a bit there is a break in the clouds.

8:23 AM. Sunrise colors on Lake Cushman. Seems like a nice quiet place to live. 3000x2000

9:13 AM. Starting the hike up the Mt. Rose trail. I got some photos of nice roadside waterfalls, but I like this one with the greenery. 1500x3000

9:52 AM. I've hiked up as far as I feel like (not very far) and start taking macro pictures on the way back down. Key for scale, I got others without the key. 100% crop of some fungi (?) and fern on a tree. 3000x2000

10:02 AM. Hard to get a sharp photo of ferns, they keep blowing in the wind. 3000x2000

10:41 AM. I got a few different shots of this mushroom. 2000x3000

That's it for the 'good' ones. Now I have 14 'alternate' versions or different views. Some of them are pretty good.

8:00 AM. There were some roadside waterfalls. This one was pretty loud. It's like a 30 foot drop. 2000x3000

8:12 AM. Another roadside waterfall. Nothing too artistic, just a long exposure waterfall. 3000x2000

8:25 AM. A few minutes past the height of the sunrise colors. I like the curving shoreline as a leading line. Trees for framing. Decent clouds, but not the best. 3000x2000

8:28 AM. Looking south instead of west. There wasn't much color, so I made it monochrome. Unfortunately I didn't line up the tree stumps evenly. 3000x2000

8:34 AM. There was still some sunrise color. The rocky shoreline and tree stumps are not a great foreground. 2000x2500

8:42 AM. Looking west. Snow, a waterfall, trees, clouds, water. 3000x2000

8:55 AM. Still looking west, wider angle. Ugly 'beach' at this lake. Hmm looking at it again, let me try a wide crop. 3000x2000

8:55 AM. Wide crop of the previous photo. I had to cut out the waterfall, but I like the foggy hills. 3440x1440

9:31 AM. Now I've left the lake and am hiking up Mt. Rose. I took a picture of this sign. It's hard to get a scale of the trees and landscape. This is looking uphill. 3000x2000

9:40 AM. A few more minutes of hiking and this is as far as I go. I got this shot looking uphill and downhill. The lake is down there (hard to see). I once got a 'trail' picture like this published in a magazine, so sometimes these random shots can be interesting. 3000x2000

10:39 AM. Now four different views of the mushrooms. There were two, here's focus on the back. 2000x3000

10:40 AM. Focus on the front shroom. Obviously I didn't clean up the pine needles and stuff. Maybe I should have? 2000x3000

10:46 AM. Maybe I should have made this one brighter. 2000x3000

10:48 AM. Last one. I took some crappy waterfall pictures after this, then I was done for the day. 1600x2400

That's it. I think some of these are good. 8:28 (monochrome) has potential. 8:55 widescreen is nice and simple. Some of the shroom shots are good.

What do you think?

Photo dump: The good and 'bad' (?) pictures from a New Years Eve hike. Let me know if you like any of the 'alternate' ones.

Just wanted to say I enjoy your photos. I don't always have time to look at them, but I enjoy them when I do. I also like alt photo #2.

That said, when I saw 'alternate' photos with alternate in quotes I thought you might be throwing in some freaky shit. Like of photo of you bare ass naked, tired to the front of your Mazda like a hunting trophy with your ass in the air. That's not my thing and yet... and yet.. I feel like I've been cheated out of something and I'm leaving disappointed.

        The second waterfall?

Huh, you aren't the only one that said the waterfalls were nice.

Sorry to disappoint. No selfies that day.

Joking aside, I skipped some of the text and didn't realize the alts started at the waterfalls. I meant the second mushroom. But I like both the waterfalls and 8:55 zoomed out view of the mountains with the ugly beach included. I also liked the shot of the switchback corner but that is mainly because I associate switchbacks with mountain biking so it makes me want to ride.

I like 8:12 a lot. All of the mushroom shots are good, imo, but they're not exactly something you'd see in a magazine or framed for artistic purposes. The landscape shots were also fine - they could easily be a background in a magazine article about the Cascades or the lake. I don't think they stand out and make you go "wow" but they're still good shots.

      My $.02 anyway.

        Hm yes, good points.

I just like doing the macro shots, they aren't necessarily going to be artistic. It's just cool seeing things up close.

Let's go to the beach and see what this storm has to offer!
