LG CX/ C9 Recommended Best Settings for Xbox Series X (4K@120Hz, VRR, HDR)

LG CX/ C9 Recommended Best Settings for Xbox Series X (4K@120Hz, VRR, HDR)

We go through our recommended best settings on a 48-inch LG CX OLED TV to obtain the highest picture quality (4k@120fps, VRR, HDR & 4:4:4 chroma) while maintaining low input lag when playing games on the Xbox Series X next-gen console.

UPDATE Nov 15 with new video https://youtu.be/vw4ia4-OmHE

I hope this helps other LG C9 or CX owners get the most out of their Series X console.

Vincent with HDTVTEST did a great video on the subject here:  https://youtu.be/5Y9qcXMQg_s

Highlights:

1. Make sure to change the icon in the dashboard to PC. This resolves issues with speckling and lines in some games.

2. Make sure to turn on ALLM and VRR support in console.

3. Turn on HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color and Instant Game Response for VRR to work properly. Optionally you can engage FreeSync Premium which does include LFC support.

4. Dolby Vision will be greyed out if you turn on FreeSync Premium because LG does not support FreeSync Premium and DV simultaneously (will become important soon once games support DV).

I would also like to add that there is a beta firmware that many have installed that fixes some flicker issues near 120Hz according to users on twitter. The raised blacks issue with VRR is not resolved in this upcoming patch and is inherent in the panel. LG has publicly stated that they are working on gamme curves to help with this in a future firmware update.

I watched this one the other day. Changing the icon to the PC was something I did not previously know about.

I’m playing Horizon Zero Dawn at 1080p30 HDR on a base PS4 and it keeps sizing me. I’m close enough to my CX65 to see it’s clearly not 4K, but it’s still gorgeous.

I cannot wait to play stuff in 4K60 as soon as I can get a Series X up in here.

What HDR setting do you mean?? You definitely want HDR if the content is HDR, but the simulated HDR mode is pretty bad

C9 owners, how did you enable pc mode? It doesn't show up in the same spot as on the CX apparently

I think click the pencil icon in the top right from the home menu then you should be able to change the icon for the input to a picture of a pc

          Ah good call, thanks Milleh.

Also, holy cow the LG interface is a nightmare. Why is a setting like that so hidden?! Who in their right mind would ever guess that changing the icon for an input would actually change the image quality?

Yea, their menu is so bad

Also who would think changing the 'icon' would turn on PC mode haha

I set up a new CX for my dad and hit a weird hurdle with a new AVR.

There’s a satellite box connected to a Yamaha hdmi 2.0 AVR. If I turn the TV and AVR on, the input will be set correctly to the AVR HDMI input for the satellite, and then less than a second later the TV will force the AVR to TV (eARC) input instead, killing audio. It does this for other sources too.

It’s some CEC crap. I like CEC, but haven’t figured out how to prevent it from doing this. I even turned off the CEC on the TV and it still does this.

I’m short, the TV forces the AVR to TV input when it turns on, which is really annoying. Halp.

Guys, does this look normal? I have a ton of horizontal lines running across the screen and I always notice it during any kind of playback. I've had the set for less than a month so I think this is recent because I haven't noticed it before.

Here's an example from the built-in YouTube app:

This is using the built-in apps. I don't have any HDMI sources hooked up to it.

That’s not good. At the very least I would try unplugging the TV and holding the power button down on it for about 30 seconds to do a hard reset. Otherwise, I would initiate a live chat with LG. They are usually pretty responsive.

Is it worth contacting LG or just exchange/return? That’s what I’m leaning towards since I got them at Costco.

Return that shit if you can easily. If a hard reset doesn’t fix it. Looks like a panel issue to me.

              The 30 seconds+power button didn’t fix the issue :(

Now I’m debating outright returning or doing an exchange. There are some things about the set I don’t like that the Sony A9 seems to fix.

              Blah.
