Forge is a quick gameplay highlight creator out today

As part of a new company founded by former WeGame CEO Jared Kim, a new gameplay recording app called Forge has gone into public beta, allowing PC users to record short clips in the background of their game without compromising performance.

Those looking to share gameplay highlights without a particularly powerful PC gaming rig may have a potential solution. Former WeGame CEO Jared Kim announced a new program to help record and upload short-form gaming clips without putting a strain on user hardware.

Forge is a free Windows app that automatically records all gameplay the moment a game is launched. Players can then upload their clips to the Forge network or other social media platforms to easily share them with the world. A simple clipping interface will allow users to quickly craft highlight 5-30 second clips. The Forge app will run quietly in the background and will not interrupt gameplay or affect performance at any point.

For the sake of trying this out, this writer briefly took this app for a spin. Here's a quick clip:

This app really is build for brief highlights. It's easy to forget just how little 30 seconds is, so it may not cover all the footage you're looking for. But for quick Vine-length highlights, it's a very simple interface to use, as it's a simple, no-frills clip interface that takes practically no time at all. For laypersons that don't dabble in video editing, this is a cheap and ideal solution. The actual Forge site itself also offers a simple layout, but the autoplaying videos with sound may be a bit tough to swallow. Fortunately, as mentioned, Forge clips can be uploaded seamlessly to Facebook and Twitter and embedded to other sites, where sound will not kick in for any of those cases. (Though as noted above, the embeds still have some kinks to work out.) There are still a few desired features, like the ability to download clips locally or upload to YouTube, but the app is kicking off a public beta today, so maybe those features are still yet to come.

Forge has been in beta for several weeks, but now it is officially ready for launch. Those looking to download the public beta can do so for free and without ads. It's up and running now on the official Forge website.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
