Super Smash Bros. fulfills fantasies with Cloud Strife

Today's Nintendo Direct concluded with a Super Smash Bros. announcement that nobody saw coming. At all.

Today's Nintendo Direct concluded with a Super Smash Bros. reveal that nobody saw coming. Cloud, the iconic hero from Final Fantasy VII, is the latest combatant to hit Nintendo's fighter. He comes with his massive sword and his Limit Bursts to deliver massive punishment to foes.

The trailer also came with a new stage based on Midgar, which features a number of Final Fantasy characters and monsters. Finally, Cloud unleashed his wrath with his Omnislash Final Smash.

But readers may be asking themselves, "Wait, what about the Smash Bros. Fighter Ballot results?" Well, Nintendo ended the announcement by revealing that a special broadcast would air in December, which is likely where the answers will come.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

I'd go as far to say that I don't think that character has even made a cameo on a Nintendo platform. At least none that I know of.

Makes sense it'd be on the one Nintendo platform I've never owned.

I think this would be a great opportunity for Nintendo to take the FF7 remake and make it an exclusive to their console. Looking at the WiiU there are some of the best versions of Nintendo's titles, and folks aren't all that interested. I can only interrupt that as people aren't interested in Nintendo games. At least not enough to buy their console. I think they need something not only different, but something that remains relatively mainstream.

The 3DS and WiiU that is. I've never owned either of those machines.

No way it becomes an exclusive, but I could see maybe a special edition for the NX.

I agree it won't, but Nintendo has enough money that they could afford to do something like that, and it's those kinds of moves I think they need to make if they want to position themselves as a competitor in the new console space.

That, and a rethink of their online components.

FF7 is already "first on PS4", for whatever that ends up meaning. I suspect it'll mean a PC release, and who knows, depending on tech specs, NX. I doubt it'll go near XBO.

"First on PS4" Sounds a whole lot like what's going on with the new Tomb Raider game.

There's no reason it can't be on the XBO.

No reason it *can't*, but given the conspicuous absence of even a single XBO announcement out of SE when they've been announcing all these PS4 games is a pretty strong sign.
