Today is International Women's Day. Observed since the early 1900s, today is meant to observe the great achievements and improvements made in the name of gender equality. This celebration is also extending into the world of video games, with the empire builder Europa Universalis IV offering a free update to celebrate great women throughout history.

The Women in History DLC will offer 100 events based around historically significant women. Support and portraits for female advisors will also become available.

"It's no surprise that the role of women in history isn't as well known as that of men," Paradox's Thomas Johansson said in the initial announcement post. "Europa Universalis, admittedly, hasn't done a lot to foreground their contributions. We thought that International Women's Day was the best time to do a little bit to help balance the scales and introduce our audience to some very interesting people."

The DLC is releasing alongside the latest Europa Universalis IV patch, which includes some bug fixes, balance tweaks, and some new options. The full patch notes can be found on the Europa Universalis forums. It's all available now, so look for an automatic update upon launching the game.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
