Those that have missed out on the armed conflict in ancient Rome can now go ahead and catch up, thanks to Total War: Rome 2 - Emperor Edition, which collects all of the game's previously-released content and free updates, as well as some new tweaks and features. Those that have previously purchased the original version of the game will see their game updated to include all of the Emperor Edition changes at no extra charge.

The Emperor Edition update will feature Armenia as a new playable faction, which will feature Noble Horse Archers, Kartli Axemen, Persian Hoplites, Persian Cavalry and Elite Persian Archers among its playable units. The new update will also include the new Imperator August campaign, which takes place during the Roman Civil War. Players can side with the established Roman Republic or with the rising leader Augustus and the future Roman Empire.

The Emperor Edition will see tweaks to the politics and civil war mechanics, as well as improved graphics and a UI overhaul. To see the full list of changes, check out the patch notes.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Sweet! This may get me to get back into this game. I played it for about 40 hours, but got bored about half way through my campaign. This seems as good a time as any to give it another shot.

This is what the game should have been a full year ago.

That being said, it still has work to be put in. They finally junked the stupid magical abilities so vanilla is actually playable.

My favorite mod, Divide Et Impera, is nearing its 1.0 release and the .96 version compatible with the latest RTW2 is breathtaking to play. It makes the base RTW2 seem worthless, even now.

Someone loading up DEI for the first time before they ever saw base RTW2 may confuse it for the professional product and base RTW2 for some punk-ass mod created by a 14 yearold.

Should I pick up DEI now or wait for v1.0?

I'm playing co-op with a friend on the Emperor campaign, myself as Lepidus, he as Pompeii.

Honestly I kind of wanted to wait for DEI to integrate the new campaign map. I tried out DEI on the Grand Campaign and I just... don't like the way so much of the map is organized in comparison. I think I'll wait for DEI to become compatible with the new grand campaign map.

For instance; Italy is three provinces, a sum of eleven cities, this is including two cities in Sicily.

In Imperator, Sicily is itself a province with three cities, southern Italy is itself a province with three cities, italy centre has four and northern italia has three. This is a much, much better division of the land for both campaigns, diplomacy, and war and management.

In addition there were tweaks to France, Belgium, Syria, Judea, Numidia that all make a grand campaign more logical. DEI is planning to have two 272 BC campaigns; one available on the vanilla map, one on the Imperator edition.

It's all good, man. I sometimes come up with a bad first headline and make adjustments without remembering to delete a few words here and there.
